How to pick tea for cancer prevention?

1. Drinking Tea Prevents Prostate Cancer

Recent research shows that drinking either black tea or green tea can prevent prostate cancer. It also helps lower cholesterol, reduce cell damage caused by smoking, and even prevent heart disease.

Foreign researchers investigated 20 male patients with prostate cancer. Before their surgery, they drank 5 cups of green or black tea daily. After the surgery, analysis of their blood samples and prostate tissue revealed higher levels of phenols in their tissue samples. When black tea, green tea, or soda was added to the culture medium of cancer cells, the cancer cell growth rate significantly slowed down.

2. Drinking Green Tea is Beneficial for Preventing Ovarian Cancer

Researchers from Australia and China recently discovered through experiments that green tea can reduce the incidence rate of ovarian cancer in women. Women who drink green tea daily can have their ovarian cancer incidence rate reduced by nearly 60% compared to other women.

Researchers from Curtin University in Australia and Zhejiang Cancer Hospital in China conducted an experiment on 900 women to understand the causes of ovarian cancer. Among them, 254 had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and 652 were healthy women. The results showed that daily tea consumption, especially green tea, significantly lowers the incidence of ovarian cancer. Besides drinking tea, other factors such as smoking, oral contraceptives, physical exercise, and a family history of ovarian cancer also have various effects on its incidence.

3. Drinking Green Tea Can Prevent Skin Cancer

A new study by researchers at Dartmouth Medical School in New Hampshire, USA, has found that drinking several cups of tea a day can reduce the risk of two common types of skin cancer.

According to Reuters, the research team led by Judy A. Reis, after studying the dietary habits and health status of 2,200 adults, found that tea drinkers have a lower risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma, two common skin cancers. People who drink more than one cup of tea a day have a 20% to 30% lower risk of these cancers compared to non-tea drinkers.

Research indicates that tea contains an antioxidant called EGCG, which can limit the damage of ultraviolet radiation to the skin. This effect is more pronounced in people who have been drinking tea for decades and drink at least two cups a day.

Experts on the research team point out that the above findings do not mean that drinking tea can replace sun protection. There is no evidence that drinking tea reduces the risk of skin cancer for people who get sunburned multiple times.
