Did you know? You should always remove the plastic bag before putting vegetables in the fridge.

After we finish grocery shopping, it's a common habit to throw the plastic bags containing the produce directly into the refrigerator. However, this action can potentially pose a hazard to your health.

First, some plastic bags are not very breathable. If the humidity inside the bag is too high and the oxygen content is too low, it can cause fruits and vegetables to undergo anaerobic respiration, producing a large amount of alcohol. At the same time, this can also lead to bacterial growth, significantly reducing the safety and nutritional value of the produce. Second, colorful plastic bags are often made from recycled plastic, and there is a possibility that the coloring agents used may contain benzo[a]pyrene (a potent carcinogen). When in contact with food, these substances can transfer to it. Third, if the manufacturing process is not up to standard, plasticizers can leach from the surface of the bag. When you handle the food inside, these substances can be ingested, potentially causing harm to the body.

So, what should you do instead of using plastic bags? The correct approach is to use plastic wrap. The special process and materials of plastic wrap provide good breathability and preservation properties, and high-quality plastic wrap does not have the issue of contamination from small-molecule monomers. When purchasing, you should choose one with the packaging labeled as being made of PE (polyethylene). To distinguish between them: first, look at the color; a roll with a yellowish tint is made of PVC, while a white one is made of PE. Second, rub it with your hand; PE plastic wrap generally has poor adhesion and is easy to unroll after being rubbed, whereas PVC plastic wrap has better adhesion and is difficult to unroll. For leafy greens, you can spray a little water on the leaves, place them in plastic wrap, and store them in the refrigerator at 0°C to 8°C, preferably not for more than 3 days. For vegetables with stems, such as tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers, you can sprinkle a little water, wrap them in plastic wrap, and place them directly in the refrigerator, or put them in a semi-transparent plastic bag in a ventilated area in the kitchen.
