Not all foods that claim to be delicious and nutritious are actually nutritious. Keep the following 10 foods in mind, as they may not be as healthy as you imagine!
1. Fish Fillets
Most fried fish fillets are made from cod, which is rich in healthy unsaturated fatty acids (like DHA). As a result, various fish sticks and fillet products have labeled themselves as "nutritious." However, please note that the packaging for cod fillets often lists a dozen or more ingredients. The extensive processing has made them less healthy—loaded with salt, MSG, and saturated fats from frying. Therefore, if you're buying processed fish products, the harm they may cause to your health could outweigh the benefits.
2. Canned Soups
Soups are very healthy, inexpensive, and easy to make. However, canned soups are a "mixture" with very low nutritional value, made from salt, fat, artificial additives, preservatives, and perhaps some dehydrated carrots. A can of soup can contain 1000 milligrams of sodium, which is about half of your daily recommended intake. So, it's better to prepare your own chicken, beef bone, and vegetable soup to make a steaming, fragrant bowl yourself.
3. Green Tea Drinks
Asians generally love green tea, even turning it into an art form. Green tea contains antioxidants and other healthy components that can prevent cancer, heart disease, aging, and other age-related diseases. However, most Americans don't like the taste, so manufacturers add sugar and other additives to make green tea drinks, selling them everywhere under the guise of healthy beverages. In fact, any ingredient on the "green tea" bottle, such as saccharin or preservatives, makes it less healthy for us.
4. Yogurt Products
Yogurt is made by fermenting fresh milk and is rich in protein, calcium, and vitamins. For those who are lactose intolerant and can't drink milk, yogurt can be a great choice. However, the yogurt sold in major US supermarkets has been turned into a "dessert" full of sugar and various processed fruits, and it's this "packaging" that allows merchants to disguise it as a health food. Therefore, it's best to choose plain non-fat yogurt when buying, and add your own fruit if necessary.
5. Brown Potatoes
Brown potatoes from Iowa are cheaper and easier to grow compared to common potatoes. However, the starch in these potatoes is quickly converted into blood sugar after consumption, increasing the risk of diabetes and obesity. Because their taste isn't very good, many people have to take measures to make them tastier: boil them, mash them, add butter, or peel and fry them, then sprinkle salt on top. Foods prepared this way are even less healthy.
6. Popcorn
Nowadays, people no longer see popcorn as a healthy food like they used to. In fact, popcorn is made from corn, which is rich in fiber, low in calories, and contains almost no sugar, salt, or fat. However, today's microwave popcorn is loaded with many additional ingredients to improve its taste, so it is no longer a healthy and nutritious food. Choosing inexpensive bulk popcorn when buying is a good option, and you should control the amount of salt and butter yourself.
7. Bread
The most common bread in the US is the mass-produced white loaf. High-quality bread is indeed made just from flour, water, plus a small amount of salt and yeast. However, today's packaged white bread contains sugar, corn syrup, and many other ingredients. Foods processed this way are quickly converted into blood sugar once you swallow them. Even many mass-produced whole wheat breads are now unhealthy because they use "harmful substances" to improve their taste: sugar, salt, and softeners. It's best to choose raisin oat bread or barley bread spread with pure jam.
8. Breakfast Cereals, Corn Flakes
Cereals such as wheat, barley, rice, and oats have always been one of the most important foods for humans. The protein, dietary fiber, and vitamins they contain are incomparable to other foods. However, food manufacturers have taken advantage of the word "cereal" to make a fortune. They combine a small amount of cereal with large amounts of starch, white sugar, corn syrup, salt, food coloring, and preservatives to produce "colorful" breakfast cereals that are very popular with children, which greatly reduces the nutritional value of these cereals.
9. Commercial Organic Foods
Organic foods are grown naturally without the use of any pesticides or fertilizers, and are almost seen as a "savior" in an era of widespread food pollution. For over 30 years, we have been pursuing this goal. But driven by profit, its nutritional value system is beginning to face a crisis. The organic milk we drink now comes from factory-farmed cows that are force-fed organic grain. There are also various "junk foods" labeled as "containing organic ingredients," which disguise themselves as healthy foods through organic labels. Only the manufacturers know how much organic content is actually in them.
10. Pizza
In Italy, pizza is even legally protected, stipulating that it must be made from whole wheat flour, tomato sauce, white cheese, olive oil, basil, and other spices. Pizza was originally very nutritious. The pizzas sold by many fast-food chains today use preservatives, cheap artificial fats, nutritionless canned fruits, freezable meats for long storage, and large amounts of salt... These pizzas are very high in calories and sodium, yet their nutritional value is negligible.
