Loud sounds, such as music, or excessive noise can increase the risk of deafness. According to a report in the UK's The Guardian on June 2, a new US study has found that people with unhealthy diets have a greater risk of deafness, while a balanced diet can help reduce the risk of hearing loss.
In the new research, multiple animal experiments conducted by Dr. Colin Le Prell, a professor at the University of Florida, and his colleagues have shown that dietary supplements such as vitamins A, C, E, and magnesium can help prevent hearing loss. The principle is that these nutrients can reduce inflammation and swelling and increase blood supply to the inner ear. Large-scale population surveys have shown that people who consume a healthy diet with sufficient fruits and vegetables daily have significantly better hearing thresholds than those with poor diets. Two ongoing human clinical trials will reveal the effects of these nutritional supplements and a new drug on hearing protection in noisy environments. If all goes well, it will mean that people can effectively protect their hearing by maintaining a balanced diet and increasing their intake of nutrients like vitamins.
Dr. Le Prell stated that the new research results indicate that taking supplements like vitamins before going to noisy places such as dance halls can protect hearing. However, experts also warn that no matter how effective medication is, avoiding noisy environments remains the best strategy for preventing hearing damage.
