I have a huge craving for salty food; I might have some strange illness.

Having a strong craving for salty foods, or suddenly becoming very fond of salty tastes, can sometimes be a sign of a rare illness called "Addison's syndrome." This is an endocrine disease caused by adrenal gland dysfunction.

In addition to craving salty foods, people with this condition also experience severe fatigue, overall muscle weakness, and continuous weight loss. At this point, the preference for salty food is no longer just a simple change in taste.

Among the hormones secreted by the adrenal glands is one called "aldosterone," which has the function of retaining sodium. When it is secreted normally, the sodium we consume can be properly stored in the body. If its secretion is abnormal, the ingested sodium is excessively excreted. When sodium levels are too low, the body instinctively seeks out salty foods to replenish it, because salt contains sodium.

The "adrenal glands," as their name implies, are located on top of the kidneys. They secrete multiple hormones that help maintain blood pressure and cardiovascular function and are involved in the metabolism of proteins, sugars, and fats. When the adrenal glands malfunction, it is called "adrenal insufficiency." This "insufficiency" often develops gradually, so the symptoms of the disease also appear progressively and worsen over time. As a result, a person becomes increasingly weak, loses their appetite, and becomes progressively thinner. They may also experience low blood sugar and low blood pressure. In women, menstrual cycles may also become irregular.

Because these symptoms develop slowly, many people mistake them for simply getting older and having a weaker constitution. It is only when acute situations occur, such as catching a cold or getting a bacterial or viral infection, that the aforementioned problems suddenly worsen.

The hormones secreted by the adrenal glands are indispensable when the body encounters accidents or emergencies, and can even be called "emergency hormones." Naturally, "adrenal insufficiency" weakens the body's ability to handle such emergencies. What is a minor illness for others can become a major, life-threatening one for them, a condition known as "Addisonian crisis."
