According to a report by United Press International, US experts have found that the vegetable compartment in the refrigerator is the primary breeding ground for bacteria that cause food poisoning. Where in the kitchen are the most germs found?
After conducting an annual survey of bacteria in homes, Lisa Yakas, a microbiologist at the National Sanitation Foundation, and Robert Donofrio, director of the International Center for Applied Research, found that 6 areas in the kitchen can easily lead to foodborne diseases if not properly cleaned and disinfected.
They include: 1. The vegetable compartment in the refrigerator, which hides Salmonella, Listeria, yeast, and mold. 2. The meat compartment in the refrigerator, which hides Salmonella, E. coli, yeast, and mold. 3. The gasket of a food blender, which hides Salmonella, E. coli, yeast, and mold. 4. The can opener, which hides Salmonella, E. coli, yeast, and mold. 5. The plastic scraper, which hides Salmonella, E. coli, yeast, and mold. 6. Food storage containers with rubber seals, which hide Salmonella, yeast, and mold.
