Have some millet porridge before bed.

Sleep is an important means of balancing the body's Yin and Yang, the best energy conservation, the best reserve and recharging, and the top remedy for recovering from fatigue and stepping out of sub-health.

The TCM mechanism of sleep is: when Yin qi is abundant, one sleeps (falls asleep); when Yang qi is abundant, one wakes up. Therefore, one should get into bed before the Zi hour (9-11 PM) and enter the optimal sleep state during the Zi hour. According to the sleep theory in the *Huangdi Neijing* (The Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon), midnight at the Zi hour is when Yin and Yang meet, and water and fire interact in harmony, known as "He Yin" (combining Yin). It is the time of day with the heaviest Yin, and since Yin governs stillness, one should sleep soundly during this time.

There are four great treasures for improving sleep quality. The first is to advocate for "Zi-Wu" sleep. The "Zi" (11 PM-1 AM) and "Wu" (11 AM-1 PM) hours are when the body's meridian qi "combines Yin" and "combines Yang," respectively, which is beneficial for nourishing both Yin and Yang. Falling asleep before 11 PM yields the best results. Resting at this time best nourishes Yin, leading to the most effective sleep and achieving twice the result with half the effort. A nap during the Wu hour (11 AM-1 PM) only needs to be 30 minutes long, as this is the time of "combining Yang," when Yang qi is abundant, making it the most efficient time for work.

Additionally, slow down your breathing rhythm before sleep. Before bed, you can practice activities such as appropriate sitting meditation, walking, watching slow-paced television, or listening to slow, gentle music to gradually calm the body. Calmness gives rise to Yin, and when Yin is abundant, sleep follows. It is best to practice a few minutes of quiet qigong while lying in bed, achieving a state of mental tranquility.

Before sleep, you can eat something that nourishes the Heart's Yin, such as rock sugar, lily, and lotus seed soup; millet and red date congee; water chestnut powder; or longan water... This is because after a person falls asleep, the heart continues to work hard. Among the five organs, the heart works the hardest, so appropriately supplementing the Heart's Yin will be beneficial to health.

For those with insomnia, don't forget to soak your feet in warm water before bed, as this can promote the interaction between the heart and kidneys. The interaction between the heart and kidneys means the harmony of water and fire, which promotes the combination of Yin and Yang. When Yin and Yang embrace each other, sleep naturally reaches its optimal state.
