Diet and Precautions for Gallstone Patients

As the pace of life quickens, many people often neglect their personal lives for work, and irregular diets create opportunities for many diseases, with gallstones being one of them. Gallstones have a significant impact on the human body. If not treated in time, they can not only lead to diseases like cholecystitis but, in severe cases, can even cause gallbladder cancer, endangering the patient's life. Gallstones are mainly caused by unhealthy eating habits, so dietary considerations for gallstone patients are as follows:

Dietary Considerations

1. Pay attention to food and water hygiene. When eating raw fruits and vegetables, wash them thoroughly first, then rinse them with boiled or cool water to prevent ingesting roundworms and pesticide residues. Develop the good habit of drinking boiled water instead of unboiled water.

2. Eat more foods rich in vitamins, such as green vegetables, carrots, tomatoes, spinach, and cabbage. You should also eat more fruits like bananas and apples regularly.

3. Use vegetable oil for cooking, and prioritize stewing, braising, and steaming your dishes.

4. Eat more lean meats, chicken, fish, walnuts, black fungus, kelp, and seaweed regularly.

5. Eat more foods that promote bile secretion, relax the sphincter of the bile duct, and have a cholagogic effect, such as hawthorn, dark plum, and corn silk (steeped in tea to be sipped slowly).

Food Restrictions

1. Foods high in cholesterol, such as animal hearts, livers, brains, intestines, as well as egg yolks, century eggs, roe, and chocolate.

2. High-fat foods, such as fatty meat, lard, and fried foods. Foods with a lot of oil, like rich pastries, should also be avoided, as excessive fat can cause gallbladder contraction, leading to pain.

3. Overeating during holidays or gatherings with friends and family. Binge eating can promote a large secretion of bile, and the strong contraction of the gallbladder can then cause inflammation of the gallbladder and local colic.

4. Spicy and stimulating condiments, such as chili peppers and black pepper.

5. Tobacco, alcohol, and coffee. These stimulating foods can increase stomach acid, and the intense contraction of the gallbladder can cause spasms in the sphincter of the bile duct, making it difficult for bile to be discharged and easily inducing biliary colic.

6. Avoid foods that cause gas: Do not consume foods that are prone to causing gas, such as sweet potatoes, potatoes, celery, onions, radishes, chives, soybeans, bamboo shoots, garlic, carbonated drinks, and acidic juices, coffee, cocoa, etc.
