The orange is a treasure trove: five parts with amazing benefits.

Oranges are rich in carbohydrates, such as glucose, fructose, and sucrose, vitamins, malic acid, citric acid, protein, fat, dietary fiber, and various minerals. According to the latest research by Australian scientists and food industry research institutions, eating one orange a day can help people avoid certain cancers, such as oral cancer, laryngeal cancer, and stomach cancer.

1. Orange Pulp

The pulp is sweet and sour in taste, and cool in nature. It has the functions of stimulating appetite, regulating qi, relieving cough and moistening the lungs, and sobering up. It is mainly used to treat symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, poor appetite, dry mouth and tongue, lung-heat cough, and excessive alcohol consumption. Because it is rich in Vitamin B1 and Vitamin P, it can assist in treating hyperlipidemia, arteriosclerosis, and various cardiovascular diseases. The substance "nomilin" it contains also has a significant anti-cancer effect and can prevent stomach cancer.

2. Dried Orange Peel (Chenpi)

This is the dried, mature outer peel of an orange, with the older ones being of better quality. It is warm in nature, with a pungent and bitter taste. It has the functions of regulating qi and strengthening the spleen, drying dampness and resolving phlegm, stopping cough and lowering adverse qi. It can be used to treat symptoms such as fullness and pain in the epigastrium, poor appetite, nausea, vomiting, belching, hiccups, loose stools, diarrhea, and cold-phlegm cough. It can also detoxify fish and crab. When harvesting dried orange peel, the red outer peel after removing the white inner skin is called "juhong," and the white inner skin after removing the red outer peel is called "jubai." Both are also used clinically. They have the same effects as dried orange peel, but the former focuses on drying dampness and resolving phlegm, while the latter is better at harmonizing the stomach and transforming dampness.

3. Green Tangerine Peel (Qingpi)

This is the outer peel of unripe tangerines or young fruits, named for its green color. It is warm in nature, with a bitter and pungent taste. It has the functions of soothing the liver and breaking qi, dispersing nodules and resolving phlegm. Its effect is stronger than that of dried orange peel. It is often used for symptoms caused by liver depression and qi stagnation, such as fullness in the chest and hypochondrium, stuffiness in the epigastrium, hernia, food stagnation, swelling or lumps in the breasts, and abdominal masses.

4. Orange Seeds (Juzi)

These are the seeds of the orange. They are slightly warm in nature, with a flat and bitter taste. Their main function is to regulate qi, disperse nodules, and relieve pain. They are effective for symptoms such as testicular swelling and pain, hernia pain, breast lumps and swelling, and back pain.

5. Orange Vascular Network (Jueluo)

This is the network of veins inside the orange peel. It is sweet, bitter, and neutral in nature. It has the functions of promoting qi circulation, unblocking collaterals, resolving phlegm, and stopping cough. It is mainly used to treat symptoms such as chest and hypochondriac pain due to phlegm stagnation in the collaterals, and coughing with sputum or bloody sputum.

Medical Reminder

Oranges are warm in nature. Eating too many can easily lead to "heatiness," causing symptoms such as mouth sores, dry mouth and tongue, sore throat, and constipation. Moderate consumption can increase appetite and nourish the body; improper consumption, however, can be unbeneficial. For those with a "heaty" constitution and patients with chronic hepatitis and hypertension, it is recommended to eat tangerines, which can enhance the liver's detoxification function, accelerate cholesterol conversion, and prevent arteriosclerosis.
