In autumn, the dry weather makes it a peak season for coughs. For throat discomfort and cough symptoms, you can try steaming pears with Chuanbei (Fritillaria cirrhosa). It is not only delicious but also has fewer side effects compared to medicine. The preparation of pears and Chuanbei is quite particular; it's not as simple as just putting them together to steam. The time and heat control are very important.
I. How to Steam Pears and Chuanbei
To fully utilize the medicinal effects, some people prefer to steam and boil Chuanbei for a long time, which is a major misconception. The cough-suppressing components of Chuanbei do not dissolve in water and can evaporate with the steam. Prolonged steaming and boiling can easily cause the medicinal properties to dissipate. The correct method is to first soak the Chuanbei in cold water to soften it. The pear should not be peeled, but cut in half lengthwise, cored, and the Chuanbei placed inside. Then, reassemble the pear halves, tie them tightly with a string, and steam for half an hour. During the steaming process, the pear flesh will fully absorb the Chuanbei components, and eating the pear flesh is all it takes to achieve the desired effect.
