Foreign nutritionists have reported that eating three oranges a day can meet a person's daily requirement of vitamin C. In addition to the pulp, the orange has at least five other uses in traditional Chinese medicine: orange leaves, orange peel, tangerine peel, orange seeds, and orange pith. Here are three examples of simple food-based remedies for your reference: Rock Sugar, Tremella, and Orange Segment Soup
Ingredients: 2 ripe oranges, 30g tremella (silver ear fungus), rock sugar to taste (not too sweet), and 10 goji berries.
Method: Place the orange segments with their pith into a pot of water and steam, covered, for half an hour. Remove, add rock sugar, and sprinkle with goji berries. Consume when warm.
Function: This soup has a sweet flavor with subtle hints of bitterness. It is used for mild coughs caused by catching a chill at the beginning of autumn. Note: It should not be used by those with a "hot lung" cough. Citrus and Hawthorn Drink
Ingredients: 30g raw hawthorn, 20g dried tangerine peel, 1 large red orange (using its seeds and fresh pith).
Method: Simmer the hawthorn, tangerine peel, orange seeds, and pith in water for 40 minutes to obtain 500ml of liquid. Drink in two divided servings.
Function: Suitable for the initial stages of breast tenderness in women. Orange Cake Tea
Ingredients: 1 orange cake, 10g dried hawthorn.
Method: Slice the orange cake thinly, place it in a teapot with the dried hawthorn, and brew with freshly boiled water. Cover and steep for 10 minutes.
Function: This tea relieves chest tightness, promotes the downward flow of qi, resolves phlegm, and stops coughing. It can be used to treat diarrhea in children caused by indigestion or eating excessive raw, cold foods, or melons and fruits.
Although the entire citrus plant is valuable, it should not be consumed in excess. The pulp is warm and sweet in nature. Individuals with a "yin deficiency and excess fire" constitution may experience "internal heat" symptoms, such as canker sores, a sore throat, and constipation, from eating a large quantity of oranges in a short period. Additionally, because orange pulp contains organic acids, it is best not to eat oranges on an empty stomach to avoid irritating the stomach lining and causing discomfort.
