Five Ways to Enjoy Honey

As autumn deepens and the weather becomes drier, special attention should be paid to the diet to nourish yin and moisten the lungs. Honey is an excellent remedy for "moistening dryness," but there are several important things to know when consuming it.

1. Choose "common varieties". Some fresh types of honey on the market, such as honeysuckle or aloe honey, may be blended, as these crops are rarely grown on a large scale. It is recommended to purchase common types like acacia or jujube honey, and avoid being overly superstitious about functional honeys.

2. Drinking in the morning replenishes energy. Consuming honey in the morning not only moistens yin and relieves dryness but can also quickly replenish physical energy. It is best to take honey 1-1.5 hours before a meal or 2-3 hours after to avoid irritating the stomach. A special note: those with a weak or "cold" spleen and stomach should not consume honey on an empty stomach. You can spread it on bread or a steamed bun to fully preserve its nutritional value.

3. Cool water for bowel movement, warm water for nourishment. The water temperature for mixing honey should not exceed 50°C, as this can easily destroy its nutrients. Using warm water (around 40°C) for consumption has a better nourishing effect, while using cool water (at room temperature) is more effective for promoting bowel movements.

4. Avoid contact with metal objects during storage. Honey is acidic, so do not use metal containers for storage to prevent chemical reactions. Furthermore, crystallization of honey is a normal phenomenon and is not related to its quality. After use, keep the container tightly sealed, as honey is highly hygroscopic and can absorb odors. Prevent moisture and foreign smells from entering to avoid fermentation and spoilage. The storage temperature should not be too high, as this can destroy its nutritional components.

5. The idea that "autumn honey is easily toxic" is a misconception. A popular belief is that due to the flowering season, autumn honey is more likely to contain toxic nectar and should therefore not be eaten raw, but must be cooked to neutralize the poison. This claim is incorrect. Firstly, very few flower varieties are toxic, and they are only found in a few mountainous areas. Beekeepers choose their apiary locations based on the environment, making it very difficult for toxic honey to enter the market. Secondly, high-temperature heating does not eliminate toxicity; instead, it significantly damages the nutritional value of the honey. Do not believe this claim.
