In the last decade, the Five-Element Vegetable Soup has been all the rage in Japan, with remarkable effects on preventing diseases, enhancing the body's immunity, and increasing resistance to illness. It is prepared by boiling burdock root, daikon radish, daikon radish leaves, carrots, and shiitake mushrooms in a specific ratio. The green daikon radish leaves nourish the liver, the red carrots nourish the heart, the white daikon radish nourishes the lungs, the black shiitake mushrooms nourish the kidneys, and the yellow burdock root nourishes the spleen. Regular consumption can "nourish the five organs and strengthen the body."
According to China's traditional food therapy system, the formula of the "Five-Element Soup" is not without reason. Traditional Chinese Medicine has long had the theory of "the generation, control, and transformation of the Five Elements." The *Huangdi Neijing* (The Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon) states: "The liver, wood, green, prefers sourness; the heart, fire, red, prefers bitterness; the spleen, earth, yellow, prefers sweetness; the lungs, metal, white, prefers pungency; the kidneys, water, black, prefers saltiness. Internally, they govern the five organs; externally, they correspond to the five elements; and in color, they match the five directions."
The combination of the Five Elements, Five Colors, and Five Flavors can nourish the five organs, regulate qi and resolve stagnation, balance yin and yang, tonify the kidneys and qi, and strengthen the foundation and root. It has excellent health benefits for a wide range of chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, high blood sugar, high cholesterol, constipation, insomnia, gynecological diseases, cataracts, presbyopia, psoriasis, various inflammations, and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.
Currently, the "Application and Promotion of Vegetable Health Preservation Method," submitted by Xuzhou Tianli Industry and Trade Co., Ltd., has been listed as a science and technology achievement promotion project by the China Traditional Chinese Medicine Science and Technology Development and Exchange Center. The series of dietetic health products launched by this therapy, including the Five-Element Vegetable Soup and burdock tea, will play a positive role in improving the dietary structure of the Chinese people, enhancing their physical fitness, and reducing medical costs.
From the perspective of individual ingredients, the materials in the "Five-Element Soup" have a theoretical basis for preventing disease and fighting cancer.
Burdock root: Rich in arctiin, arctigenin, inulin, palmitic acid, and other substances. Its protein, calcium, and plant fiber content ranks first among root vegetables. American nutrition experts consider burdock a gentle herb that helps maintain the body's good condition, with no toxic side effects, and it is hailed as "nature's best blood purifier." China's *Materia Medica* records that burdock promotes growth, inhibits tumors, and has antibacterial properties.
Daikon radish: There is a folk saying, "October daikon is like a little ginseng," and the daikon radish can be considered an excellent product for preventing and treating cancer. The various enzymes it contains can break down carcinogenic nitrosamines. Its interferon inducer activity is extremely strong, possessing antiviral and anticancer functions.
Daikon radish leaves: Also known as radish stalks or radish greens, they have the effects of aiding digestion, regulating qi, and harmonizing the middle jiao. They can be used to treat conditions such as disharmony between the spleen and stomach, and indigestion of old food.
Carrot: Contains abundant carotene, which has antioxidant effects, inhibits the growth of free radicals, and boosts immune function. The mannitol it contains can also treat chronic diarrhea.
Shiitake mushroom: Black dried shiitake mushrooms are rich in vitamins and minerals. The ribonucleic acid in them can enhance the body's ability to resist disease and tumors; scientists in Japan, the United States, and other countries have found that a certain enzyme in shiitake mushrooms can improve the body's ability to inhibit tumors, hence shiitake mushrooms are called "the new soldier in the fight against cancer."
