Researchers at Cornell University in the United States recently discovered that eating apple peels helps prevent cancer.
Researchers analyzed and studied some red apple peels, from which they found 12 mixed triterpenoid compounds, three of which were newly discovered. They isolated each triterpenoid compound and then used them to fight cancer cells. The results showed that each triterpenoid compound could inhibit the growth of cancer cells or kill cancer cells, but the inhibitory effect on different cancer cells was not the same.
The researchers stated that from studies in experimental mice, it was found that various substances in apple peels can inhibit the growth of cancer cells, including liver cancer cells, colon cancer cells, and breast cancer cells. Eating apples helps prevent diseases, but it is actually the apple peel that plays a real role, especially the triterpenoid compounds rich in the apple peel.
The researchers said that the anti-cancer effects of triterpenoid compounds need to be further studied. This research result was published in the latest issue of the American Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.
