Dietary Habits for Patients with Hypertension

As the saying goes, food is the first necessity of the people. A reasonable diet can keep you from being overweight or underweight, and keep your cholesterol level neither too high nor too low. For patients with hypertension, a reasonable diet is particularly important.

What should patients with pay attention to in their diet?

①First of all, control the intake of energy. It is recommended to eat complex carbohydrates, such as starch and corn, and eat less monosaccharides that are easy to cause blood lipid to rise, such as glucose, fructose and sucrose.

②Limit the intake of fat. Use vegetable oil to cook food, eat more marine fish containing unsaturated fatty acids, so as to oxidize and lower plasma cholesterol, prolong platelet aggregation, inhibit thrombosis, and prevent stroke. It contains more linoleic acid, which also has a certain effect on increasing the elasticity of microvessels and preventing complications of hypertension.

③Appropriate intake of protein. The daily intake of protein for patients with hypertension should be 1g per kilogram of body weight. Eating fish protein 2-3 times a week can improve vascular elasticity and permeability, increase urinary sodium excretion, and thus lower blood pressure. If hypertension is complicated by renal insufficiency, protein intake should be limited.

④Eat more foods rich in potassium and calcium but low in sodium, such as potatoes, eggplant, kelp, and lettuce. Foods high in calcium: milk, yogurt, dried shrimp. Eat less meat soup, because the nitrogen extract in meat soup can increase uric acid in the body and increase the burden on the heart, liver and kidneys.

⑤Limit the intake of salt: The total amount of salt converted from salt used in cooking and other foods containing sodium should be gradually reduced to less than 6g per day, which is a flat cover of an ordinary beer cap after removing the gasket. This helps to lower blood pressure and reduce sodium and water retention in the body. ⑥ Eat no less than 8 liang (400g) of fresh vegetables and 2 to 4 liang (100-200g) of fruits every day. ⑦ Appropriately increase the intake of seafood: such as kelp, seaweed, and marine fish.
