Precautions for taking Sago
1. Concomitant use of aluminum hydroxide, magnesium oxide, or metoclopramide (Reglan) with this product may reduce its blood drug concentration.
2. It may reduce the therapeutic effect of sucralfate.
3. This product is a hepatic enzyme inhibitor. When used with propranolol, it increases the serum concentration of propranolol, slowing the heart rate at rest. When used with phenytoin or other hydantoins, it may increase the blood concentration of the latter, leading to phenytoin poisoning.
4. When used with opioids, there have been reports of adverse reactions such as respiratory depression, mental confusion, and disorientation in patients with chronic renal failure.
5. This product can increase the absolute bioavailability of verapamil (Isoptin). Since verapamil can cause rare but very serious side effects, attention should be paid to this interaction.
6. When used with theophylline, it can reduce the demethylation metabolic clearance rate of the latter by 20%-30%, increasing its blood concentration.
7. When used with benzodiazepine tranquilizers, it may increase the blood concentration of diazepam, enhancing sedation and other central nervous system depression symptoms, and may progress to respiratory and circulatory failure.
8. Patients taking digoxin and quinidine simultaneously should not also use this product, because this product can inhibit the metabolism of quinidine, and quinidine can displace digoxin from its binding sites, resulting in increased blood concentrations of both quinidine and digoxin.
9. This product can delay the metabolism of caffeine. When used together, it can enhance the effects of caffeine and increase the likelihood of toxic reactions.
10. When used with warfarin anticoagulants, it can reduce the excretion rate of the latter from the body, leading to a tendency for bleeding.
11. When used with tetracycline, it can decrease the dissolution rate, absorption, and effect of tetracycline; the opposite is true for aspirin.
12. Concomitant use with ketoconazole can interfere with its absorption, reducing its antifungal activity, but this change can be avoided by taking some acidic drinks at the same time.
13. Concomitant use of this product with captopril may cause psychotic symptoms.
14. Because this product has a neuromuscular blocking effect similar to that of aminoglycosides, an effect that is not antagonized by neostigmine but can be antagonized by calcium chloride. Therefore, when used with aminoglycoside antibiotics, it may lead to respiratory depression or respiratory arrest.
