Top 10 Facts about Health Supplements
Anemia is a condition where there are too few red blood cells or insufficient hemoglobin in the blood. Medically, it is classified into types such as iron-deficiency anemia, megaloblastic anemia, and hemolytic anemia, with iron-deficiency anemia being the most common. The most common and effective treatment for iron-deficiency anemia is oral or intravenous iron supplements. However, clinically, many patients report that oral iron supplements are not as effective as expected.
Unknown to many, there are many factors that can affect the efficacy of iron supplements, which should be noted during use.
1. The best oral iron supplements are ferrous sulfate, ferrous fumarate, and ferrous gluconate, because iron is absorbed in its ferrous (divalent) form and functions in its ferric (trivalent) form. Traditional Chinese medicine blood-enriching products include Hongtao K, Xue'er, Pu Xue, and Nüren Yuan.
2. When supplementing iron for anemia, one should adhere to the principle of "small doses, long-term use." Strictly follow the doctor's prescription for medication; do not arbitrarily increase the dosage to avoid iron poisoning. Never take a large single dose, as this can easily lead to acute iron poisoning. Symptoms of iron poisoning include: dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, shock, etc. In severe cases, it can lead to coma, convulsions, and even death.
3. When taking oral iron supplements, place the tablet on the tongue and swallow it directly with water. Do not chew the medication to avoid staining your teeth and affecting your appearance.
4. Take the medication after meals to avoid taking it on an empty stomach, which can reduce nausea and vomiting caused by gastrointestinal irritation. Simultaneously take Vitamin C or fruit juice, as an acidic environment facilitates iron absorption.
5. Foods containing calcium (such as tofu) and high-phosphate foods (such as milk) can form precipitates with iron supplements and should therefore be avoided.
6. Do not drink strong tea or coffee while taking oral iron supplements, as they contain large amounts of tannic acid, which can form insoluble iron precipitates and hinder iron absorption. Milk and other alkaline substances can also affect iron absorption, so they should be avoided or consumed in minimal amounts. Dairy products (especially milk) contain the least amount of iron and should not be consumed in large quantities, as this will reduce the amount of iron already present in the gastrointestinal tract.
7. Be aware of the adverse effects of certain medications on iron absorption: Tetracycline antibiotics can form insoluble complexes with iron supplements, which is不利于 absorption. Therefore, simultaneous use should be avoided. If both must be used, they should be administered at least 3 hours apart.
8. Enhance dietary care. A correct and balanced diet can prevent and treat iron-deficiency anemia. For patients who already have iron-deficiency anemia, relying solely on dietary therapy is not very effective, but it can serve as an adjunctive treatment to prevent recurrence. Correct bad habits such as being a picky eater or having a poor appetite. Have a varied diet and consume more iron-rich and nutritious foods, such as: meat, eggs, fish, various seafood (like kelp and seaweed), animal liver and blood, coarse grains like buckwheat and sweet potatoes, bean products, mushrooms, black fungus, and a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables.
9. After several months of treatment, when clinical symptoms improve and hemoglobin levels return to normal, do not stop the medication immediately. Continue taking it for another 3-6 months under a doctor's guidance to replenish the body's stored iron and prevent a relapse of anemia.
10. During oral iron supplement therapy, iron reacts with hydrogen sulfide in the large intestine to form iron sulfide, which causes the stool to turn dark brown, similar to gastrointestinal bleeding. There is no need to be alarmed about this, as the stool color will return to normal after stopping the iron supplements.
