6 Unhealthy Breakfast Habits That Threaten Your Health
A scientific breakfast should include the following four types of food:
1. Carbohydrate-based energy-providing grain foods, such as bread, steamed buns, etc.
2. Dairy products, milk products, and soy products.
3. Fresh vegetables and fruits.
4. Protein-rich foods, such as meat and poultry eggs.
However, office workers, in a rush for time and convenience, often settle for a perfunctory breakfast. Little do they know that these habits are unacceptable:
I: The "Nutritious" Breakfast
Breakfast content: Nutritious foods like fruits, vegetables, and milk
Mistake: Lacks staple foods considered "low in nutritional value."
This type of breakfast is popular with women, especially those trying to lose weight through a "zero-starch" plan or a vegetarian diet. They believe staple foods are a source of calories and thus avoid grains, often eating only highly nutritious foods.
In fact, this thinking is wrong. The idea that staple foods only provide calories and have no nutritional connection stems from a poor understanding of the nutritional value of carbohydrates. They are particularly important for the body's various functions.
If there is not enough heat supply, the body will automatically break down and release energy. Therefore, long-term avoidance of staple foods can more easily lead to malnutrition and weaken various bodily functions.
Furthermore, dairy products like milk, soy milk, and yogurt, as well as acidic fruits and high-fiber fruits like tomatoes, bananas, snow pears, plums, and apricots, should not be consumed on an empty stomach.
TIPS: When you wake up in the morning, your breakfast must not lack staple foods. You can eat some staple foods like bread, steamed buns, or congee first, then drink milk or eat fruit. This way, nutrients can be better absorbed, and your body will be healthier.
II: Fast Food Breakfast
Breakfast content: Fast food like hamburgers, fried chicken, sandwiches
Mistake: High-calorie, fried foods can easily lead to obesity.
Waking up in the morning and looking at the clock, you realize you're late and have no time for a proper breakfast, so you have to buy fast food on the way to work, like a hamburger or fried chicken. It's convenient and quick, and you feel like eating a lot and well in the morning—surely a meal with meat, vegetables, and bread is sufficient.
Little do you know that such a high-calorie breakfast can easily lead to obesity, and long-term consumption of fried food is also harmful to the body. Additionally, this type of Western-style breakfast has the problem of nutritional imbalance—it's high in calories but often lacks vitamins, minerals, fiber, and other nutrients.
TIPS: If you really have no choice but to eat Western fast food for breakfast, don't forget to add a serving of vegetables or fruit salad. Or drink a bottle of yogurt to maintain nutritional balance and ensure the intake of various nutrients. But do not do this long-term!
III: The "Soy Milk and Fried Dough Stick" Traditional Breakfast
Breakfast content: Fried dough sticks, soy milk
Mistake: Long-term consumption of high-temperature fried foods can easily cause cancer.
China is a country with a rich culinary culture, and the breakfast combination of soy milk and fried dough sticks has become a unique cultural symbol. Many people, having been accustomed to this since childhood, believe that this is the most correct and nutritious way for Chinese people to eat breakfast.
In fact, fried dough sticks are high-temperature fried foods, similar to baked cakes and pan-fried dumplings, with a high oil content. Generally, after food is deep-fried at high temperatures, its nutrients are destroyed, and carcinogenic substances can be produced. Moreover, these foods are high in calories and difficult to digest. Coupled with soy milk being a medium-fat food, the oil content of this breakfast combination is clearly excessive and not suitable for long-term consumption.
TIPS: It's best to eat the soy milk and fried dough stick combination sparingly. Give yourself a fresh start in the morning, don't eat too greasy, and pay attention to supplementing with vegetables. Many people think it's not good to eat raw or cold foods in the morning and therefore avoid fruits and vegetables. In fact, it's okay to eat a fruit after breakfast to make the nutrition more balanced.
IV: The "Junk" Breakfast
Breakfast content: Various snacks, such as rice crackers, cookies, chocolate pies, etc.
Mistake: Insufficient nutrition leads to a decline in physical function.
Women tend to have the habit of eating and storing snacks. If they find they are short of time in the morning, they will often grab a snack for breakfast, which is convenient and quick.
Snacks should absolutely not replace the three daily meals. It's okay to eat snacks like cookies or chocolate when you're hungry between meals, but using snacks to replace the most important meal of the day, breakfast, is very unscientific.
Furthermore, most snacks are dry foods, which are not conducive to digestion and absorption for the body, which is in a semi-dehydrated state in the morning. This meal must be able to moisten the stomach and intestines to ensure their normal function for the day. Moreover, snacks like cookies are mainly made from grains, which can provide energy in a short time but will quickly accelerate the feeling of hunger, making you want to eat more. Eating snacks for breakfast can easily lead to malnutrition, a decline in physical fitness, and make one susceptible to various diseases.
TIPS: Breakfast should not be replaced by snacks, and attention should be paid to not making it "too dry." The food should contain sufficient moisture. If your breakfast for the day is too dry, you can add a cucumber.
Habit Five: Eating While Walking
Breakfast content: Breakfast bought from roadside stalls, eaten while walking, with hands, feet, and mouth all in motion...
Mistake: It is not good for digestion and can cause gastrointestinal problems over time.
If you wake up late and are in a hurry for work, you might just buy something to eat from a roadside stall. In winter, you might eat while walking to prevent the food from getting cold. Foods like buns, tea eggs, "Roujiamo" (Chinese sandwich), and "Jianbing" (Chinese crepe) sold near residential entrances or bus stops are often their first choice. They buy one and "eat it on the spot."
When we were children, our mothers taught us not to eat while walking. This is because eating on the move is very detrimental to gastrointestinal health, hindering digestion and absorption. Moreover, street food often has hygiene problems, and you can get sick from what you eat.
TIPS: If you buy breakfast from a roadside stall, be sure to pay attention to hygiene. Try not to eat your breakfast on the way to work to avoid harming your health and making a poor impression.
Six: Leftover Breakfast
Breakfast content: Leftover food from the previous night, such as stir-fried rice with leftovers, noodles with leftovers, etc.
Mistake: Overnight food can produce carcinogenic substances.
Many people believe that stir-fried rice is tastier when made with overnight rice! So many "moms" will cook extra dinner to make stir-fried rice for their children the next morning, or simply reheat the leftovers. This breakfast is convenient, saves effort, and is rich in content, almost equivalent to a full meal, and is often considered nutritionally complete.
In fact, after being left overnight, vegetables can produce nitrite (a carcinogen), which can be harmful to human health.
TIPS: Vegetables left overnight should be thrown away decisively. Don't sacrifice your health for the sake of a little thrift. As for other leftover foods you want to save for breakfast the next day, be sure to store them properly to avoid spoilage. Also, food taken from the refrigerator must be thoroughly reheated.
As you can see, most people's breakfasts are "missing this and lacking that," failing to achieve nutritional balance, or they are eating things that simply shouldn't be eaten. The editors of Pacific Women's Network suggest that you should frown and say "no" to these unhealthy habits!
