6 Foods That Seem Healthy Are Actually Dangerous
Most of the nutrients the human body needs are obtained from daily diet. Healthy food and a reasonable diet can ensure the normal function of the body and improve the quality of life. Some foods seem healthy, but are actually very harmful to the human body. We should be vigilant about these foods in our daily diet.
1. Leftover Rice
Leftover rice is easily contaminated by microorganisms during storage. Therefore, leftover rice must be stored in the refrigerator at a low temperature and thoroughly reheated before consumption.
2. Leafy Greens
During the application of manure, leafy greens may be contaminated with Norovirus. Eating unwashed, contaminated vegetables raw can easily lead to infection. Be sure to wash them thoroughly before eating, and it's best to blanch them in boiling water.
3. Shrimp and Crab
The main food allergen for Chinese people is shrimp and crab. A protein in shrimp and crab may cause skin itching in some people, and in severe cases, it can also trigger asthma. Therefore, people with allergies should not eat shrimp and crab.
4. Hami Melon
Danger factor: The rind has many cracks, making it susceptible to bacterial contamination. Bacteria may exist inside the melon's skin, and once the melon is cut, these bacteria can get into the flesh.
Solution: Washing the rind before eating can eliminate some bacteria, but this is not the best solution. You must be careful when storing cut melon, as a large number of bacteria can grow at room temperature. Therefore, cut melon should be stored in the refrigerator.
5. Sushi
Danger factor: The biggest problem with sushi is parasites, flatworms, and roundworms, such as those in raw fish. Although raw fish cannot be guaranteed to be safe, dipping sauce or wasabi may have a slight bactericidal effect.
Solution: Cooking fish at a high temperature of at least 145 degrees for 1 minute can kill any parasites in the fish. But then it wouldn't be sushi. The only way to eat raw fish without the risk of parasites is to eat sushi made with frozen fish. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends that fish be frozen at -31 degrees for at least 15 hours to kill parasites.
6. Packaged Green Vegetables
Danger factor: Leafy green vegetables, including lettuce and spinach, have been the "culprits" in several disease outbreaks in recent years. One of the largest outbreaks was the 2006 E. coli outbreak, linked to packaged spinach, which caused 199 people to get sick and 3 deaths. E. coli and Salmonella can contaminate produce in various ways, such as animal feces seeping into water or soil, or through contamination during hand-picking or packaging. In most cases, washing with water cannot remove these dangers.
