Bananas are not only a delicious and soft fruit, but can also serve as a staple food. With a sugar content as high as 20%, and a 1:1 ratio of fructose to glucose, they are an ideal food for replenishing carbohydrates and eliminating fatigue. Consequently, they are often eaten by drivers to curb hunger. However, bananas are extremely rich in minerals, particularly containing a large amount of potassium. Eating just one banana a day is sufficient to maintain the body's potassium levels at a normal state. Consuming too many can alter the ratio of potassium to sodium in body fluids. This is especially true when eaten on an empty stomach, which can cause a significant increase in potassium in the blood. When the blood's potassium concentration exceeds the normal level of 5.5 millimoles/liter, it can inhibit the cardiovascular and other systems, leading to symptoms such as significant numbness, muscle paralysis, drowsiness, and fatigue. In severe cases, it can cause heart block and arrhythmia, making it easy for traffic accidents to occur while driving. Therefore, drivers should not eat bananas on an empty stomach.
