4 Major Precautions for Cupping at Home
Cupping, as a traditional weight loss method, is highly favored and trusted by people for its safety, lack of side effects, and ability to regulate endocrine function and enhance physical fitness. So, what are the methods, tools, and precautions for using traditional fire cups at home?
Precautions for Cupping at Home: Tools and Techniques
First, pay attention to material selection. Traditional Chinese medicine often uses bamboo cups. If they are unavailable, glass bottles or ceramic cups can be used, but the opening must be thick and smooth to prevent the thin edge from injuring the skin. The bottom is preferably wide and semi-circular.
Before cupping, the cup should be washed and dried. Then, have the patient lie down or sit comfortably, exposing the area to be cupped. Next, light the fire and insert it into the cup. When lighting, generally hold the cup with one hand and a lit taper with the other. The movement must be quick. After waving the lit taper inside the cup a few times, withdraw it and immediately place the cup on the treatment area. The cup must be firmly covered on the affected area while the flame is still burning; do not wait for the flame to go out, as this will result in a weak suction, which is not conducive to drawing out dampness. A good suction feels as if the cup's opening is tightly attached to the body. Be careful not to heat the rim of the cup to avoid burns.
Generally, the cup can be removed after 15-20 minutes. When removing, do not pull the cup forcefully or twist it. The correct technique is to tilt the cup to one side with one hand while pressing the skin with the other, allowing air to enter through the gap, which will cause the cup to detach naturally from the skin.
You can also use the sliding cupping method. Sliding cupping involves placing the cup on the skin and then, with one or both hands, gently lifting it and moving it along the patient's skin. You can move in one direction or back and forth. This way, multiple areas can be treated. When sliding, it is important to apply some lubricant to the area or the cup's rim, such as glycerin, paraffin oil, or scraping ointment, to prevent skin abrasion during the process.
Cupping has both health maintenance and therapeutic effects. A row of cups on the back, especially along the Jiaji points, the Du meridian, and other meridians, can regulate the five internal organs and strengthen the body. It is particularly effective for conditions related to wind, pain, and cold. Regularly cupping eight major health points—Baihui (GV20), Dazhui (GV14), Neiguan (PC6), Hegu (LI4), Shenque (CV8), Zusanli (ST36), Sanyinjiao (SP6), and Yongquan (KI1)—can help unblock the eight extraordinary meridians.
Four Major Precautions During Fire Cupping:
1. When cupping, choose an appropriate posture and a fleshy area. It is not suitable for areas with improper posture, movement, bony prominences, or excessive hair.
2. When cupping, select a cup of suitable size based on the area being treated. The operation must be quick to ensure a firm and effective suction.
3. When using a fire cup, be careful not to burn or scald the skin. If a burn occurs or the cup is left on for too long and a blister forms, small blisters do not need special treatment; just cover them with sterile gauze to prevent bursting. For larger blisters, use a sterile needle to drain the fluid, apply gentian violet, or cover with sterile gauze to prevent infection.
4. Cupping is not suitable for areas with skin allergies, ulcers, edema, or major blood vessels. It is also not suitable for patients with high fever and convulsions, or for the abdomen and lumbosacral area of pregnant women.
Special Reminder: People with chronic lung diseases should use fire cupping with caution.
Patients with underlying lung conditions, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), tuberculosis, lung abscess, or bronchiectasis, should not use fire cupping. When there is inflammation in the lungs, it is often accompanied by alveolar damage or fluid retention in the lungs. If cupping is used for treatment, it can cause a rapid change in intrathoracic pressure, leading to the rupture of pulmonary bullae on the lung surface and thus causing spontaneous pneumothorax.
