Prevent 3 Diseases during the Start of Summer
Introduction: On May 5, 2012, one of the traditional solar terms, Start of Summer (Lixia), will arrive. In China, the "Start of Summer" is traditionally considered the beginning of summer. Around this time, as temperatures rise, some diseases may also emerge. The diseases to be vigilant for during the Start of Summer are: headaches, skin diseases, and gastrointestinal diseases.
1. The high temperatures, muggy conditions, thunderstorms, strong winds, and abrupt weather changes of summer can often trigger or worsen headaches. Additionally, insufficient sleep, emotional agitation, and mental fatigue can also induce headaches. To manage summer headaches, one should not overly rely on medication. Conservative treatment methods can be employed, such as adjusting diet, replenishing fluids, cooling off and preventing heatstroke, consuming cold food in moderation, regulating emotions, and getting adequate rest.
2. Summer is also a season with a high incidence of skin diseases. Annoying skin conditions like heat rash, allergic dermatitis, tinea versicolor, and eczema threaten the health of many people. To cope with skin diseases, the public should bathe frequently and change clothes often. Items like quilts and towels should be regularly laundered and disinfected. It is advisable to avoid places with many insects, and when the skin itches, one can apply some anti-itch lotion.
3. Summer is also a peak period for gastrointestinal diseases such as bacterial dysentery, acute gastroenteritis, and food poisoning, with improper methods of cooling off being the main cause. To prevent gastrointestinal diseases, attention must be paid to food hygiene, and hands should be washed before meals and after using the restroom. It is also important to drink plenty of boiled water and consume fewer cold drinks.
