How to Prevent "Air-Conditioning Leg" in Summer?

In the hot summer, many people hide in air-conditioned rooms to enjoy the cool air. Although air conditioning can temporarily cool you down, long-term exposure to low-temperature air-conditioned environments can easily lead to knee arthritis and other "air-conditioning illnesses," commonly known as "air-conditioning leg" (prolonged stays in air-conditioned rooms can easily cause cold stimulation to the knee joint, leading to synovitis, bursitis, knee arthritis, and other diseases). So, how can we prevent air-conditioning illness?

Why Does "Air-Conditioning Leg" Occur?

Investigating the causes, it was found that 80% of "air-conditioning leg" cases are due to spending too much time working, studying, or living in low-temperature air-conditioned rooms, where the knee joint is stimulated by cold, causing synovitis, bursitis, and leg muscle spasms, or vasoconstriction and tissue hypoxia, which in turn leads to "synovitis." Women, in particular, who like to wear skirts and shorts, are more susceptible to cold stimulation on their exposed knees, causing "air-conditioning leg."

What Are the Effects of "Air-Conditioning Leg"?

Many people do not realize the harm caused by long-term air conditioning use, thinking the most severe consequence might just be a cold, dizziness, or a headache. Young people, especially, tend to be less concerned. However, the damage of cold air to joints is significant. If you don't pay attention to keeping warm, it's easy to develop arthritis as you get older.

How to Prevent "Air-Conditioning Leg"

1. Don't set the air conditioner too low

The air conditioner temperature should not be too low; it's generally recommended to keep it between 25°C and 27°C. Avoid direct exposure to the air conditioning vent, as the air from the vent is colder. When you feel a chill indoors, be sure to get up and move your limbs and body to promote blood circulation.

2. Avoid using the air conditioner for extended periods

Limit the time you use the air conditioner; don't have it on all day. If you work in an air-conditioned room, it's advisable to leave during your lunch break to give your body a "rest."

3. Keep warm

If you must stay in a low-temperature air-conditioned room for a long time, it's best to wear long pants or silk stockings to protect your knees and the soles of your feet. You can also cover your knees with a towel for protection.

4. Exercise your leg muscles appropriately

In daily life, you can also exercise your leg muscles through simple and easy methods to improve joint function and effectively prevent disease. You can sit on a chair, extend your legs, keep your toes pointed to tense your calf muscles, hold for 10 seconds, then slowly lower and relax, repeating 2-3 times. You can also choose to do slow squats, 10 repetitions per set, followed by a slow walk to relax. These exercises can help prevent "air-conditioning leg."
