Nine Lies About Healthy Eating

1. Fresh vegetables are healthier than refrigerated vegetables

If you mean vegetables that have just been picked from the fields, this statement is perfectly correct. In reality, however, the vegetables we eat are rarely that fresh. They have usually been stored for several days, during which time their vitamins gradually degrade. In contrast, vegetables that are rapidly frozen at ultra-low temperatures can retain more vitamins. This is because they are frozen immediately after being picked, which effectively prevents the loss of vitamins.

2. Brown bread is whole wheat bread

Health-conscious people are often misled by the color of food. Brown bread is considered a healthier and more nutritious food. What they don't realize is that the brown color is often just from food coloring added by the baker to make it more appealing to consumers. Therefore, brown bread is not the same as whole wheat bread. When buying whole wheat bread, it's best to check the label.

3. Buttered toast is healthier than french fries

At one time, people knew that french fries from fast food were high in calories, so they chose what seemed like a healthier option: toast. However, to make toast taste better, many people spread butter on it. In fact, compared to french fries, buttered toast has very little difference in its fat content. They also contain almost identical amounts of starch, protein, and minerals. Moreover, french fries are relatively richer in vitamin C. Therefore, buttered toast is not necessarily healthier than french fries.

4. Glucose can keep a person in an excellent state

Although the "flash energy" provided by glucose can make a person mentally alert and energetic for a short time, this energy is quickly depleted, and a person may even feel hungrier than before.

5. Sweeteners help with weight loss

Many people know that eating sugar can lead to weight gain, so they use sweeteners as a substitute to help them lose weight. However, research shows that all sweeteners (especially saccharin) accelerate insulin secretion, which in turn makes you more dependent on sugar.

6. Dark-colored eggs are more nutritious than light-colored eggs

Dark colors are often synonymous with health and high nutritional value, but the color of an eggshell is only related to the breed of the hen. The nutritional value of an egg depends entirely on the hen's health and the quality of its daily feed.

7. Honey is low in calories and helps with weight loss

If you are counting on honey to help you lose weight, you are likely to be disappointed. In fact, 100 grams of honey contains 303 calories, while 100 grams of sugar contains 399 calories. The former is only slightly lower in calories than the latter. However, in terms of potassium, zinc, and copper content, honey is more nutritious than sugar.

8. Brown sugar is more beneficial than white sugar

Both brown sugar and white sugar are extracted from sugarcane or sugar beets. The production process for brown sugar is slightly simpler than for white sugar, and it contains more glucose and fiber. It also releases energy more quickly and has a higher absorption and utilization rate. However, the sugar content and calories in brown sugar are almost the same as in white sugar. Furthermore, brown sugar is not as sweet as white sugar, so people tend to use more of it when adding it to tea or coffee. Therefore, brown sugar can sometimes be more detrimental than white sugar.

9. Drinking alcohol can warm you up

Although a person may feel warm all over after drinking a glass of alcohol, this is just an illusion. In reality, the body's core temperature does not rise but actually drops. This is because the tiny blood vessels under the skin dilate rapidly due to alcohol consumption. The increased surface area causes the blood to cool down more quickly, leading to a drop in body temperature.
