According to a January 2, 2013 report by the British Daily Mail, the World Cancer Research Foundation recently claimed that one of the primary reasons many people fail to lose weight is that they do not give up alcohol, as the calorie content in alcoholic beverages is surprisingly high.
The World Cancer Research Foundation has developed an alcohol calorie calculation software. It can convert the calories in alcoholic drinks into a format that is easier for people to understand. For example, two 175ml glasses of wine contain 248 calories, equivalent to eating three chocolate cookies, and it takes 52 minutes of walking to burn off that many calories. Two large glasses of cider contain as many calories as six chocolate cookies, requiring 102 minutes of walking to burn them off. Therefore, drinking less alcohol can have a significant effect on losing weight or maintaining a normal weight.
Kate Mendoza, head of health information at the World Cancer Research Foundation, stated that being overweight is the second-largest risk factor for cancer after smoking. Drinking one bottle of beer a day can increase the risk of developing liver and bowel cancer by nearly one-fifth.
