Chuanbei steamed pear, a renowned Chinese remedy, is cherished for its soothing effects on coughs and sore throats. This simple yet nourishing dish combines snow pear, Chuanbei (Fritillaria bulb), and rock sugar to create a warm, healing treat.
To prepare, start by selecting a ripe snow pear. Wash it thoroughly and cut off the top third as a lid. Core the pear gently, removing the seeds without breaking the bowl shape. Soak 1-2 grams of Chuanbei in warm water for 10 minutes to soften, then place it inside the pear cavity. Add 1-2 teaspoons of rock sugar for sweetness. Secure the pear lid with toothpicks if needed.
Next, place the pear in a deep bowl and add 2-3 tablespoons of water. Steam for 25-30 minutes over medium heat until the pear is tender and the liquid turns slightly syrupy. For extra richness, some recipes add honey or goji berries.
Once steamed, remove the toothpicks, let it cool slightly, and enjoy the pear warm with the syrupy juice. Chuanbei’s mild bitterness balances the pear’s natural sweetness, making it both delicious and therapeutic. This traditional remedy is perfect for cold seasons, offering comfort and relief with every spoonful.
