Classic recipe for yam and red dates porridge

Classic Chinese Yam and Red Date Porridge

Chinese yam and red date porridge, a nourishing staple in traditional Chinese cuisine, is beloved for its simplicity and health benefits. This warm, comforting dish is easy to prepare and packed with nutrients, making it ideal for any season.

To start, gather 150g of Chinese yam, 10 red dates, 50g of glutinous rice, and a small handful of goji berries (optional). Begin by soaking the glutinous rice in water for 30 minutes to soften it. Peel and dice the Chinese yam into small cubes, then remove the pits from the red dates and slit them slightly to enhance their flavor.

In a pot, combine the soaked rice, yam, and red dates with about 800ml of water. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, then reduce the heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 40–50 minutes until the porridge thickens and the rice turns creamy. For added richness, you may stir in a teaspoon of honey or rock sugar during the last 10 minutes of cooking. Finally, toss in goji berries for a vibrant color and extra nutrition, and let them steep for 5 minutes before serving.

The result is a velvety porridge with a subtly sweet flavor, where the yam’s earthiness complements the red dates’ natural sweetness. Served hot, it aids digestion, boosts immunity, and provides a comforting start to the day—a timeless recipe that balances taste and wellness perfectly.
