Diet for the fifth week of pregnancy

Nutrition During the 5th Week of Pregnancy

The 5th week of pregnancy is a critical time for fetal development, as the embryo’s neural tube, which becomes the brain and spine, begins to form. Prioritizing nutrient-dense foods supports this rapid growth while keeping you and your baby healthy.

Focus on foliate-rich foods like leafy greens (spinach, kale), lentils, and fortified cereals, as foliate reduces the risk of neural tube defects. Lean proteins such as eggs, chicken, and beans provide amino acids for cell development. Incorporate iron sources like lean red meat or spinach to support increased blood volume, and pair them with vitamin C (found in citrus fruits or bell peppers) to enhance absorption. Omega-3 fatty acids from fatty fish (like salmon, limited to 2 servings weekly) or chia seeds aid brain and eye development.

Stay hydrated with water and opt for small, frequent meals to ease nausea. Avoid raw or undercooked foods, unpasteurized dairy, and high-mercury fish. Limit caffeine to under 200mg daily. A balanced diet now lays a strong foundation for your baby’s growth and your well-being in the months ahead.
