Nurturing Classroom-Phase 1 Lunar Meal

The Postpartum Nutrition Journey: Phase 1 Postpartum Meals

The first phase of postpartum recovery, often called the "sitting month" or *confinement*, focuses on nourishing the body to heal, replenish nutrients, and support lactation. Phase 1 meals (typically the first 1–2 weeks postpartum) prioritize warmth, digestibility, and gentle replenishment, avoiding raw, cold, or spicy foods that may hinder recovery.

Key staples include warm broths—such as chicken or fish soup with ginger—to boost hydration and energy. Iron-rich foods like lean red liver or spinach help combat postpartum anemia, while whole grains (e.g., brown rice, barley) aid digestion. Protein sources such as eggs and tofu provide essential amino acids for tissue repair. Herbal teas, like red date or longan brew, are sipped to calm the mind and enrich blood flow.

Dishes are often steamed or slow-cooked to preserve nutrients and ease digestion. Small, frequent meals (5–6 times a day) maintain stable blood sugar and support milk supply. Spices like ginger and sesame oil are used moderately to warm the body, while cooling ingredients (e.g., cucumber) are avoided.

This foundational phase lays the groundwork for physical strength and emotional balance, helping new mothers transition smoothly into motherhood with vitality and care.
