Pregnancy Class-First Week of Pregnancy

Prenatal Classroom: Week 1 of Pregnancy

The first week of pregnancy marks the beginning of a remarkable journey, though it often starts before you even realize you’re expecting. Medically, pregnancy is dated from the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP), not from conception. This means at week 1, you’re not actually pregnant yet—your body is preparing for ovulation, the critical step that kickstarts the process.

During this week, hormonal shifts stimulate the ovaries to mature an egg. Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) rises, prompting one dominant follicle to release a mature egg around day 14 of your cycle (for a typical 28-day cycle). This egg then travels down the fallopian tube, ready to be fertilized by sperm if conception occurs. Simultaneously, the uterine lining thickens to create a nourishing environment for a potential embryo.

While you may not notice physical changes yet, this is a time for foundational preparation. Start taking a daily prenatal vitamin with at least 400mcg of folic acid, which is vital for preventing neural tube defects. Avoid alcohol, smoking, and certain medications, and prioritize a balanced diet rich in leafy greens, lean proteins, and whole grains.

Emotionally, week 1 is about awareness and intention. Track your cycle to identify fertile days, and consider consulting your healthcare provider to discuss preconception health. This quiet week sets the stage for the incredible transformation ahead, blending science with the wonder of new life.
