Pregnancy Class-Week 4 of Pregnancy

Prenatal Classroom: Week 4 of Pregnancy

At week 4, you’re in the early stages of pregnancy, and while your baby is still tiny, incredible developments are underway. This is when a missed period and a positive pregnancy test often confirm the news, marking the start of a transformative journey.

Internally, a blastocyst—a tiny ball of cells—has implanted into the uterine lining, now called the endometrium. This tiny cluster is already dividing into two parts: the embryo, which will become your baby, and the placenta, the lifeline that provides nutrients and oxygen. By the end of this week, the embryo is about the size of a poppy seed, with the beginnings of the neural tube (which later forms the brain and spine) and a primitive heart starting to pulse.

For you, hormonal changes may bring early symptoms: mild cramping, breast tenderness, or fatigue as your body adjusts to support the pregnancy. It’s a good time to schedule your first prenatal visit, where your healthcare provider will confirm the pregnancy and offer guidance.

Focus on foundational habits: start a prenatal vitamin with folic acid (crucial for the baby’s development), stay hydrated, and prioritize rest. While excitement or anxiety is normal, remember you’re not alone—seek support from your partner, friends, or healthcare team. This week is a quiet but powerful start to the amazing process of creating new life.
