Braised Cabbage and Tofu: A Simple Comfort Dish

Braised cabbage and tofu is a beloved, nutritious dish that’s easy to prepare and bursting with flavor. Here’s a refined recipe to elevate this classic.

Start by gathering fresh ingredients: a medium cabbage, firm tofu, garlic, ginger, soy sauce, vegetable broth, and a pinch of white pepper. Begin by pressing the tofu to remove excess water, then cut it into 1-inch cubes. Slice the cabbage into bite-sized pieces, mince the garlic and ginger.

Heat a tablespoon of oil in a wok or deep pan over medium heat. Sauté the garlic and ginger until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add the cabbage and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until slightly wilted. Gently fold in the tofu cubes, being careful not to break them. Pour in ½ cup of vegetable broth and 2 tablespoons of soy sauce, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and simmer for 8-10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld. The cabbage should become tender, and the tofu will absorb the savory broth.

For extra richness, drizzle in 1 teaspoon of sesame oil before serving. Garnish with chopped green onions or a sprinkle of chili flakes if desired. This dish pairs perfectly with steamed rice and offers a comforting balance of textures—soft tofu, crisp-tender cabbage, and a umami-rich sauce. It’s a wholesome meal that’s both simple and satisfying, perfect for any day of the week.
