Introduction

Also known as foxtail millet, it is a traditional practice in many parts of northern China for women to use millet with brown sugar to recover after childbirth. Millet porridge is nutritious and is praised as "ginseng soup."

How to Select

1. High-quality millet has uniform grain size and color, appearing milky white, yellow, or golden yellow, with a luster, few broken grains, no insects, and no impurities. Place the millet to be tested on a soft white paper, moisten it with your breath, then rub the millet with the paper several times. Observe if there is a slight yellowish tint on the paper. If so, it indicates that the millet has been dyed with a yellow pigment. Alternatively, a small sample can be moistened with water and the change in water color observed. A slight yellowish tint suggests the presence of a yellow pigment.

2. High-quality millet has a fresh fragrance without any other odors. Severely spoiled millet easily turns to powder when rubbed by hand, has many broken grains, and may smell slightly musty, sour, putrid, or have other abnormal odors.

3. High-quality millet tastes pleasant, slightly sweet, and without any off-flavors. Inferior millet may be tasteless or have a slight bitter, astringent, or other undesirable taste.

Benefits

1. It helps prevent and treat indigestion, nausea, and vomiting.

2. It has the effect of nourishing yin and blood, which can help new mothers with a deficient and cold constitution recover their strength.

Notes

1. Suitable as a nourishing food for the elderly, the sick, and new mothers.

2. It is best to mix with soybeans or meat. Millet porridge should not be too thin.

3. After childbirth, millet should not be the sole food; it should be combined with other foods to avoid deficiencies in other nutrients.
