Research has found that onions are quite beneficial in preventing "wealth-related diseases". Onions contain hypoxanthine, which enables cells to utilize sugar more effectively, thereby lowering blood sugar levels. Onions also contain prostaglandins, which can dilate blood vessels, reduce peripheral vascular resistance, and promote sodium excretion, leading to a decrease in blood pressure. The diallyl sulfide in onions helps prevent arteriosclerosis and lower blood lipids.
Onions contain quercetin-like substances. When induced by retinol, the resulting glycosides have a diuretic effect that reduces swelling. These benefits are helpful in preventing conditions such as obesity, hyperlipidemia, and arteriosclerosis, which is consistent with the dampness-drying and detoxifying properties of onions.
Stir-fried Onion with Tofu
The following is a recommended recipe for drying dampness and detoxifying with onions.
Ingredients: 100 grams each of sorghum and Job's tears, 100 grams of pumpkin, and 100 grams of onion.
Preparation: Soak the sorghum and Job's tears in cold water for 4 hours, then wash them and cook them into a porridge with water. Cut the pumpkin into cubes and the onion into dices. When the grains are soft, add the pumpkin cubes and onion dices to the porridge and cook until done. Adjust the sweetness and saltiness to your preference. Consume the porridge.
Indications: For those who overindulge in rich and greasy foods, suffer from spleen deficiency and dampness retention, and have symptoms such as high blood lipids, lower limb edema, excessive phlegm, and chest tightness.
Note: Onions are pungent and warm. People with excessive stomach heat should not eat too many, as excessive consumption can cause bloating and gas.
