Common poisons in the kitchen—never eat them!

The toxicity of food cannot be judged solely by its appearance, but one should not ignore the signs. Many foods in daily life seem harmless, but long-term consumption can lead to "poisoning," so be careful what you eat!

1. Green Tomatoes: Green tomatoes contain a toxic substance called solanine. Eating these unripe green tomatoes can cause a bitter taste in the mouth and lead to poisoning symptoms such as nausea and vomiting. Eating them raw is even more dangerous.

2. Rotten Cabbage: Eating rotten cabbage can cause oxygen deprivation in the body, leading to headaches, dizziness, nausea, and bloating. In severe cases, it can lead to muscle spasms, coma, and even be life-threatening.

3. Rootless Bean Sprouts: In the production process, herbicides are often used to make bean sprouts grow without roots. These herbicides contain harmful substances that can cause cancer, birth defects, and mutations.

4. Fresh Daylilies: Fresh daylilies are extremely toxic, while the dried variety is non-toxic. This is because fresh daylilies contain colchicine, a toxin that can cause symptoms like a dry throat, a burning sensation in the stomach, and hematuria (blood in the urine).

If you first blanch the fresh daylilies in boiling water, then soak them in cold water for more than 2 hours, changing the water once in between, they become safe to eat.

5. Rotten Ginger: Rotten ginger produces a highly toxic substance called safrole. Even in small amounts, this toxin can cause poisoning and degeneration of liver cells.

6. Sprouted Potatoes: The sprouts and green skin of sprouted potatoes contain high levels of solanine, making them easy to cause poisoning. Therefore, sprouted and green-skinned potatoes should not be eaten.

7. Sweet Potatoes with Black Spots: This is caused by an infection with black spot fungus, which can easily lead to poisoning after consumption.

8. Yellowed and Spoiled Tremella (Silver Ear Fungus): Yellowed and spoiled tremella is caused by contamination with Flavobacterium. Eating it can cause poisoning symptoms such as dizziness, stomach pain, and diarrhea.

9. Puffy Bean Sprouts: Bean sprouts grown with chemical fertilizers are often unnaturally white and puffy. They contain large amounts of residual ammonia, which can turn into nitrosamines under bacterial action. Consuming large amounts can cause dizziness, nausea, and vomiting.

As the saying goes, "disease enters through the mouth." Therefore, being careful about the food you consume is the most direct and effective way to prevent illness and maintain your health.
