Fresh pineapple can easily cause allergic reactions if not consumed properly.

Recently, a man surnamed Liu from Yinchuan City, Ningxia, bought several pineapples from a street vendor on his way home from work and ate them while walking. In the afternoon, he felt unwell, experiencing symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and itching all over his body. After a hospital examination, he was diagnosed with an allergic reaction caused by improper pineapple consumption.

According to Dr. Zhou from the People's Hospital of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, fresh pineapples contain chemical substances such as bromelain and glycosides. Improper consumption can easily lead to symptoms like dizziness, abdominal pain, vomiting, and numbness of the mouth and tongue. In severe cases, it may even lead to difficulty breathing and shock.

Dr. Zhou reminded that every year when pineapples are in season, some people experience adverse reactions from improper consumption. Therefore, pineapples must be soaked in saltwater for about half an hour before eating, then rinsed with cool water to remove the salty taste, which can remove the allergens.
