As summer approaches, Tan Yan, Deputy Chief Physician of the Respiratory Department at Nanjing First Hospital, reminds people that they should replenish their fluids in the summer, even if they do not feel thirsty, especially patients with hypertension.
During the height of summer, excessive sweating can lead to concentrated blood. Under conditions with slow blood flow, such as during sleep or rest, it is easy for blood clots to form. Especially for patients with hypertension, the incidence of myocardial infarction and cerebral embolism is significantly higher than in others. It is important to replenish sufficient fluids, drinking water regularly even when not thirsty. In cases of heavy sweating, fluids should be replenished promptly to dilute the blood and reduce the risk of thrombosis.
Tan Yan stated that people should increase their intake of fresh fruits in the summer. If they have diabetes, they should primarily drink clear tea or cool boiled water. Due to varying amounts of sweat, the daily fluid needs differ among different groups of people.
