Broccoli and bananas are both helpful in fighting cancer and beneficial for the heart. A new study published in the latest issue of the British Society of Gastroenterology's journal, Gut, has found that eating broccoli and bananas can also help the intestines resist bacteria and reduce the recurrence of regional enteritis.
Scientists at the University of Liverpool in the UK conducted experiments with soluble fiber from various fruits and vegetables. The results showed that the soluble fiber from bananas and broccoli could reduce the infectivity of E. coli by 45% to 82%; whereas the soluble fiber from chives, green onions, and apples did not have this effect. Therefore, experts believe that the soluble fiber in bananas and broccoli can help the intestines resist bacteria and alleviate symptoms such as intestinal inflammation, pain, diarrhea, and vomiting.
Professor Rhodes, the lead researcher of the study, believes that patients with enteritis need to eat at least one large banana or a small serving of broccoli daily to see an effect.
