Dates have many beneficial effects on the body, which is why the folk saying goes, "Three dates a day keep old age away." Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) believes that dates are sweet and warm in nature, capable of tonifying the middle jiao, replenishing qi, nourishing blood, and calming the spirit. Individuals recovering from illness, those with anemia, and women who experience cold hands and feet in winter can all regulate their bodies with dates. However, as both a food and a medicine, dates have their own unique medicinal properties. If consumed indiscriminately without considering one's constitution, not only can they fail to provide health benefits, but they can even be counterproductive. The following four types of people, in particular, should eat fewer or no dates:
Those with excessive phlegm-dampness. Such individuals often exhibit a greasy, thick tongue coating, a sweet or sticky sensation in the mouth, poor appetite, and a feeling of fullness in the stomach. In severe cases, symptoms may include dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and swelling of the eyelids and face. The moist and greasy nature of dates can easily exacerbate dampness, causing phlegm-dampness to accumulate in the body and worsen the aforementioned discomfort. People with this constitution are better off consuming foods that strengthen the spleen and promote dampness drainage, such as Job's tears, red beans, Chinese yam, and loofah.
Those who are prone to "heatiness." This type of person has a constitution that leans towards heat, frequently experiencing symptoms of "heatiness" such as constipation, bad breath, and swelling or pain in the throat and gums. As dates are sweet and warm, leaning towards a warming tonic, consuming them in large quantities would be like adding fuel to the fire.
Patients in the early stages of a cold. In the initial phase of a cold, pathogenic cold or heat is actively invading the body. Eating dates at this time, with their sticky nature, can often cause the pathogenic factors to stagnate, leading to the consequence of "shutting the door to keep the bandit inside." This makes it difficult for the body to expel the pathogens and hinders recovery.
Diabetics. Dates contain a high amount of sugar, which can raise blood sugar levels and worsen the condition for diabetic patients. Therefore, individuals with high blood sugar should not eat too many dates.
