5 Foods to Avoid When You Have a Canker Sore

1. Orange

Orange is a high-calorie fruit. Consuming too many at once can lead to symptoms of "heatiness," such as sores at the corners of the mouth, ulcers in the oral mucosa, blisters on the tip of the tongue, and a sore, dry throat.

2. Pepper

Spicy, hot, and a food of pure yang, pepper is very likely to cause heatiness. Canker sores are caused by intense internal heat and fire in the heart and stomach, which calls for cooling foods. Pepper's flavor is strongly acrid and its nature is very warm; it must not be eaten. If consumed by mistake, it will surely worsen the condition. Be very cautious.

3. Aromatic Condiments

Those with heat-related syndromes or yin deficiency with blazing fire should not consume them. As warned in the "Bencao Jingshu": "All cases of yin deficiency with yang excess, heat rushing upward... and canker sores are strictly forbidden."

4. Lychee

Lychees are rich in fructose and can easily cause heatiness and toothaches. The "Compendium of Materia Medica" also states: "Eating too many fresh ones will cause swollen gums and a sore mouth." Therefore, people with canker sores, including oral ulcers, oral thrush, and swollen gums and pain, must strictly avoid eating too many.

5. Smoking, alcohol, coffee, and stimulating beverages.
