Eating more radishes is as good as ginseng. It was praised by Li Shizhen as a "must-eat at every meal."

We are all familiar with white radish. The pharmacologist Li Shizhen once praised radish as follows: "It can be eaten raw or cooked, made into pickles or sauce, fermented into bean paste or vinegar, or even served as a staple food," calling it "the most beneficial among all vegetables." However, many people are unaware of the health benefits of white radish, let alone how to eat it to maximize its nutritional value. So, what is the best way to consume white radish? To address this question, we have invited an expert to explain for us.

Several Health Benefits of White Radish

Lowering Blood Pressure and Regulating Lipids: Decoction made from radish or its seeds can dilate blood vessels to lower blood pressure and can also increase the level of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or "good" cholesterol. Long-term consumption of fresh radish juice (twice a day, 15-20 ml each time) may also be beneficial in treating elevated serum cholesterol, preventing coronary atherosclerosis, and warding off coronary heart disease.

Bactericidal and Anti-Cancer Effects: The amylase in radish, in addition to breaking down fats and starches, can also break down carcinogenic nitrosamines, thereby preventing cancer. Lignin can enhance the function of macrophages in engulfing bacteria, foreign particles, and necrotic cells, thereby strengthening the body's immune system and exerting anti-cancer effects. Raphanin in radish seeds can inhibit the proliferation of certain cancer cells and bacteria, and can mix with bacterial exotoxin in vitro to exhibit a significant detoxifying effect.

Relieving Coughs and Reducing Phlegm: Extracts from raw radish seeds have a strong effect in suppressing coughs and reducing phlegm, while extracts from roasted radish seeds have a certain effect in relieving asthma. The common ways to consume it are to wash, shred, and marinate white radish with malt sugar, or to juice it and add honey.

Aiding Digestion and Resolving Food Stagnation: "A fortune of ten thousand strings of cash is not as good as radish with your meal." Radish is effective in enhancing appetite, promoting digestion, and resolving food stagnation. This is because the contained amylase can break down components such as starch and fat in food, and mustard oil can promote gastrointestinal motility, enhance appetite, and aid digestion, allowing the decomposed nutrients to be fully absorbed and utilized by the body.

Promoting Bowel Movements and Diuresis: Due to its high dietary fiber content, radish has a certain effect in relieving constipation. Roasted radish seeds can cause the detrusor muscle of the bladder to contract and the bladder sphincter to relax, which may be effective in treating dynamic urinary tract obstruction and mechanical obstruction caused by prostatic hyperplasia. Taking radish juice can also prevent the deposition of gallstones and has an auxiliary therapeutic effect on cholelithiasis.

4 Types of People Who Should Not Eat White Radish

People with Qi deficiency constitution should not eat white radish. Qi deficiency is a description in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for certain physical conditions. Simply put, it refers to various pathological changes caused by insufficient vital energy (Qi) in the body, including lung Qi deficiency, heart Qi deficiency, and kidney Qi deficiency. White radish is considered a cooling food, whereas people with Qi deficiency need foods that replenish Qi and blood. Furthermore, white radish also has the effect of moving Qi, and excessive movement of Qi can lead to the consumption and dispersion of Qi, worsening the symptoms of Qi deficiency.

Patients with Yang deficiency-type constipation should not eat white radish. Similarly, Yang deficiency is also a pathological condition in the body. People with Yang deficiency often feel cold in their limbs and aching and coldness in their lower back and knees. Although white radish is highly nutritious and can strengthen the stomach, aid digestion, move Qi, and dissipate stasis, it is not suitable for patients with Yang deficiency-type constipation, as it may aggravate their symptoms.

Patients with diarrhea should not eat white radish. As mentioned earlier, white radish has effects such as moving Qi and aiding digestion, and it is also a typical cooling food. Therefore, if you have gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhea, you must be cautious about eating white radish, as it will only worsen the condition and symptoms.

People taking traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) should not eat white radish. There is a folk saying that white radish counteracts the effects of medicine. However, modern research shows that white radish does not actually interact with medications. The two main effects of white radish—resolving blood stasis and moving Qi—can speed up the digestion and metabolism of TCM in the body, directly affecting the tonic and restorative effects of the medicine. Therefore, white radish should be avoided when taking TCM.

Excellent Pairings for White Radish

Braised Lamb with Radish

White Radish + Lamb: Eating lamb can dispel cold, warm the heart and stomach, and also replenish Qi and blood, nourish the liver, and improve blood circulation. However, "meat generates phlegm," and eating too much lamb can easily lead to "heatiness" (internal heat). If stewed with cooling white radish, it can not only resolve phlegm and reduce fire, but also cut the greasiness, creating a complementary nutritional effect.

White Radish + Pear: This combination can moisten the lungs, clear heat, and resolve phlegm. Pears have the effect of moistening the lungs, cooling the heart, and eliminating phlegm and fire. Juicing them with white radish not only masks the pungent taste of the radish but can also double the therapeutic benefits. For those with a weak spleen and stomach who cannot drink very cold juice, the two can also be boiled together in water.

White Radish + Scallion: When infected with wind-cold, a person may experience aversion to cold and wind, little sweating, nasal congestion with a runny nose, and a cough with phlegm. At this time, it is advisable to eat foods that generate warmth. Boiling a soup with scallion sections, ginger slices, and white radish slices can dispel cold and relieve coughs. This soup can also help prevent colds.

White Radish + Crucian Carp: A soup made with white radish and crucian carp has the effects of warming the middle jiao, directing Qi downward, strengthening the spleen, and promoting diuresis. The wonder of this soup also lies in the "two white" ingredients; the white radish soaks in the milky fish soup, which is very appetizing to look at.

How to Cook White Radish Properly

We can artificially divide the white radish into three parts: 1) the head, 2) the middle section, and 3) the tail.

The head contains more vitamin C and has a firmer texture, making it suitable for shredding or cutting into pieces for quick cooking to minimize the loss of vitamin C.

The middle section contains more sugar and has a sweeter, crispier texture, making it suitable for cold salads.

The tail contains more amylase and mustard oil, making it suitable for stewing, which helps with its effects like aiding digestion.
