This week's weather will feel like spring, and major hospitals in Shanghai have seen an early surge in patients suffering from "spring drowsiness." This morning, the outpatient and emergency departments of major hospitals like Zhongshan, Huashan, Ruijin, and the Sixth People's Hospital each saw over 3,000 patient visits, many of whom were white-collar workers. Experts remind that as the season turns to spring, people are prone to feeling lethargic and suffering from "spring drowsiness." However, many female white-collar workers skip breakfast, which can lead to cerebral hypoxia and increased drowsiness; eating too much for lunch can also burden the digestive system, making people equally susceptible to drowsiness. Excessive reliance on the bed is also a medical condition.
Cerebral hypoxia causes decreased vascular elasticity
Mr. Lin, 35, told his doctor that he spends 12 hours a day in an enclosed, air-conditioned office, often sitting still for four to five consecutive hours. Over time, he frequently experiences dizziness, dry mouth, and drowsiness. He also suffers from neck and shoulder pain, sometimes stiffness, and eye pain. He often feels full and belches, even when it's not mealtime. Recently, he feels "drowsy" as soon as he wakes up and experiences extreme fatigue at work.
Chief Physician Zhou Duan from Longhua Hospital pointed out that many white-collar workers, working for long hours in enclosed office environments, are prone to cerebral cell hypoxia and insufficient blood supply. With the arrival of spring, people with insufficient blood supply to the brain are more likely to feel lethargic and suffer from "spring drowsiness".[美食中国]
Zhou Duan said that long-term cerebral hypoxia can lead to a decrease in vascular elasticity and slow blood flow, which can result in cerebral infarction. Poor air circulation in enclosed rooms can also lead to chronic pharyngitis, reducing the body's resistance. A good breakfast can alleviate spring drowsiness
Experts report that among the patients, 30% of white-collar workers complain of recent dizziness, dry mouth, and drowsiness, along with neck and shoulder pain, eye pain, and extreme fatigue. Many of them habitually skip breakfast and overeat at lunch.
Zhang Zhirong, Director of the Outpatient Department at Shanghai Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, stated that skipping breakfast long-term can cause cerebral hypoxia, making it difficult to concentrate and increasing drowsiness. Overeating can burden the digestive system, making people equally prone to drowsiness. More sleep leads to more drowsiness, causing "spring drowsiness"
In spring, low air pressure and high humidity can easily cause a feeling of drowsiness. Some people believe that sleeping more in spring will prevent this. This is not the case. Generally, adults need about 8 hours of sleep per day; any more can actually reduce the excitability of the cerebral cortex, putting it in an inhibitory state, which makes a person even more drowsy. The result is that the more you sleep, the drowsier you become.
Professor Xu Junmian from Zhongshan Hospital pointed out that some people love to sleep in and can never wake up in the morning. Some white-collar workers are drowsy all day with a heavy head and eyes that are hard to open. They don't want to eat, and are too lazy to do anything or even speak, neglecting their daily self-care. This condition requires attention, as it may indicate a medical condition, clinically diagnosed as simple-type neurasthenia.
Experts point out that a single work posture, reversed day-night work and rest schedules, and irregular diet are all causes of "spring drowsiness." Office workers should pay special attention to these "culprits" of "sub-health."
