Four Taboos of Eating Red Dates

Jujubes are nutritious and can be used in medicine. Common varieties used for medicinal purposes include black jujubes, red jujubes, and honeyed jujubes. Black jujubes are particularly effective for nourishing blood and replenishing qi. Red jujubes are sweet in taste and warm in nature, acting to tonify the middle jiao, replenish qi, nourish blood, and calm the spirit (red jujubes are mainly used to treat symptoms such as spleen and stomach qi deficiency, blood deficiency with sallow complexion, and blood deficiency with insomnia and excessive dreaming). Honeyed jujubes have a light, long-lasting, rich, and refreshing taste and are effective for moistening and detoxifying. Although jujubes are nutritious, the following points should be noted when consuming them:

I. Avoid Excessive Consumption of Red Jujubes for Supplementation

1. Not all women are suitable for using red jujubes for supplementation. For instance, during menstruation, some women often experience swollen eyes or limbs, which is a sign of dampness retention. This group of people should not eat red jujubes because they are sweet, and excessive consumption can easily lead to the production of phlegm and dampness, causing them to accumulate in the body and thus worsening the edema symptoms. At the same time, some women who use red jujubes for supplementation and have a "heaty" constitution are also not suitable for consuming them during their period, as this can easily lead to excessive menstrual flow and harm health.

2. Although red jujubes are an excellent supplement for health, excessive consumption can also be harmful. Eating too many fresh red jujubes can easily cause diarrhea and damage the "spleen." Therefore, those with colds or fevers caused by external wind-heat, as well as patients with abdominal bloating and qi stagnation, should not consume red jujubes.

3. Red jujubes are rich in sugar (especially when made into snacks), so diabetic patients should preferably avoid them when supplementing their diet to prevent an increase in blood sugar and a worsening of their condition.

4. The best way to consume red jujubes for supplementation is by boiling them in water. This method does not affect the medicinal efficacy of the supplement and also avoids diarrhea and other issues that can be caused by eating them raw.

II. Avoid Eating Rotten or Spoiled Jujubes

Although jujubes are crisp, sweet, delicious, and nutritious, they are not easy to preserve and can easily spoil. When jujubes rot, microorganisms will multiply, and the jujube's pectinase will continue to break down pectin to produce pectic acid and methanol. Methanol can then break down further to form formaldehyde and methanol. Eating rotten jujubes can, in mild cases, cause dizziness and eye damage, and in severe cases, can be life-threatening.

III. Avoid Consuming with Vitamin Supplements

Certain substances in jujubes can decompose and destroy vitamin K, thereby significantly reducing the therapeutic efficacy of the jujubes.

IV. Avoid Consuming Jujubes When Taking Antipyretic Drugs

Consuming high-sugar foods at the same time as taking antipyretic drugs can easily form insoluble complexes, reducing the initial absorption rate. As jujubes are a high-sugar food, they should be avoided during this period. Those with tooth decay pain, lower abdominal bloating, and constipation should also not eat jujubes.
