Recently, the US "MSN" website synthesized the opinions of multiple American experts in dermatology, dentistry, and other fields, pointing out that the following 10 foods not only harm health but also accelerate aging, making them veritable "age accelerators."
1. Candy
Excessive sugar can trigger a "glycation" reaction, damaging skin collagen and leading to skin sagging. Brian Kantor, a cosmetic dentist in New York City, advises that eating too much sugar allows oral bacteria to proliferate, damaging teeth. It is recommended to rinse your mouth with water immediately after consuming sweets.
2. Alcohol
A healthy liver can normally break down toxins and maintain skin health. However, excessive alcohol consumption can impair liver function, leading to toxin buildup in the body, which in turn affects the skin, causing problems like wrinkles and sagging. A study by Case Western Reserve University also showed that alcohol can cause dehydration, disrupt sleep, and accelerate aging.
3. Burnt Meat
Grilled meat is appetizing, but be careful not to eat the black, burnt parts, as they contain pro-inflammatory hydrocarbons that can break down skin collagen.
4. Salty Foods
A heavy palate and excessive sodium intake can easily lead to problems like high blood pressure and edema. In addition to using less salt when cooking, be wary of high-sodium processed foods, such as canned goods. Rina Hirsch, former president of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, points out that canned and other processed foods often contain added sodium to preserve freshness and extend shelf life.
5. Processed Meats
Processed meats like sausages and bacon often contain preservatives such as nitrites, which can cause inflammation and accelerate skin aging when consumed frequently. Dr. Elyse Ostad of the American Academy of Dermatology suggests pairing processed meats with plenty of vegetables.
6. Spicy Foods
Spicy foods can be detrimental to the skin of menopausal women. Dr. Ostad recommends that an occasional spicy meal is fine, but one should not indulge in them excessively.
7. Energy Drinks
Energy drinks are high in sugar, which can damage tooth enamel and cause teeth to become stained. Dr. Kantor suggests drinking energy drinks through a straw.
8. Trans Fats
Trans fats promote inflammation in the body and interfere with collagen synthesis. Experts caution against trusting "0g trans fat" labels on food packaging, as this may mean the food still contains less than 0.5g of trans fat. Foods with hydrogenated vegetable oil in the ingredients list should be avoided as much as possible.
9. Milk Tea
Many people enjoy adding milk to black tea for a richer, smoother taste and to reduce astringency. However, black tea itself is a healthy beverage rich in tannins with antioxidant properties. The casein in milk can diminish the effectiveness of tannins, which is not beneficial for anti-aging.
10. Red Meat
Red meats like beef and mutton contain a certain amount of saturated fat, which can produce free radicals in the body, damage skin cells, and ultimately accelerate aging. Dr. Ostad suggests substituting red meat with leaner white meats like chicken, and pairing them with fruits and vegetables to help boost the body's antioxidant capacity and slow the aging process.
