Never eat watermelon with a spoon!

Many people find it convenient to eat watermelon with a spoon, but recently there's a saying that you shouldn't eat watermelon with a spoon. So why is that exactly? What are the dangers of eating watermelon with a spoon? Let's follow the editor to find out in detail~

Why You Shouldn't Eat Watermelon with a Spoon

1. Your appetite will get bigger

Subconsciously setting a higher target for yourself may lead to you eating more and more watermelon in the future.

2. Decreased appetite

Unconsciously eating too much watermelon can lead to a decreased appetite, causing you to skip your meals.

3. Increased blood sugar

The average sugar content of watermelon is 5.8%, with variations among different varieties, mainly consisting of fructose. In nutrition, the Glycemic Index (GI) is used to measure the extent of blood sugar response after consuming a particular food.

A GI value below 55 is considered a low-GI food, 55-75 is medium, and above 75 is high. If glucose has a GI of 100, then watermelon is 72, making it a medium-GI food. This is higher than other common summer fruits like apples, peaches, plums, and grapes.

4. A bloated stomach, red urine, or burping

When your stomach becomes noticeably bloated or your urine turns red (possibly from natural pigments in the watermelon), it's hard to imagine how much watermelon you forced yourself to eat by scooping it out.

5. Severe cases of bloating, stomach pain, or diarrhea

For watermelon that has just been taken out of the fridge, or watermelon that has become unhygienic for various reasons, eating too much of it on an empty stomach or too quickly can easily lead to bloating, stomach pain, and even diarrhea.

6. Easy to harm the spleen and stomach

Watermelon is a "cold" natured fruit, and eating too much of it can easily damage the spleen and stomach.

Precautions for Eating Watermelon in Summer

1. Control your portion size (especially for those with high blood sugar, or people who normally can't eat too much watermelon).

2. Eat less watermelon that has just been taken directly from the fridge (especially for people with sensitive gastrointestinal tracts to cold stimulation, or special groups like the elderly, children, and pregnant/postpartum women).

3. It is not recommended to directly scoop and eat a large watermelon; cutting it into pieces might be a better way to control your portion size.

4. Do not insist on or force yourself to finish the watermelon if you are already full, whether to avoid waste or because you just love watermelon.

5. Try not to treat watermelon as a drink, or even as a meal.

6. Don't buy watermelon that has been cut open for too long, especially when you don't know how many flies have flown over it or how much dust has drifted onto it.

7. It is not recommended to eat watermelon before a meal; it's better to wait one hour after a meal.

8. Do not immediately enter an air-conditioned room after sweating heavily and then eat a large amount of chilled watermelon.

How to Choose a Watermelon

1. The circle at the bottom of the watermelon, the smaller the better; conversely, the larger the circle at the bottom, the thicker the skin and the harder it is to eat.

2. It's best to choose one with a dark green color, not a dull, whitish one.

3. A watermelon with neat, orderly stripes is a good one.

4. The top of the watermelon, also known as the stem, should not be a straight line. If it's curled up, it will be very sweet.
