Fish, meat, and milk help prevent brain atrophy.

A new study shows that fish, meat, and milk contain an important vitamin that helps protect the memory of the elderly and prevent brain atrophy.

Researchers at the University of Oxford in the UK surveyed 107 elderly people aged between 61 and 87, and found that many of them had low levels of vitamin B12 in their blood; people with low levels of vitamin B12 were six times more likely to have brain atrophy compared to those with high levels.

Rebecca Wood, head of the UK charity Alzheimer's Research Trust, said: "This study shows that eating more meat, fish, or milk containing vitamin B12 and having a balanced diet helps protect the brain. Animal liver and shellfish are particularly rich in vitamin B12."
