US scientists say that eating more chili peppers, carrots, and cabbage can prevent cancer and protect vision. This is because carotenoids in these vegetables and fruits can activate genes that stimulate communication between cells, which may play an important role in cancer prevention. The loss of carotenoids is likely the main reason why the elderly go blind due to macular degeneration.
The Australian Daily, citing a report from Australian Associated Press, reported on the 20th that a research team led by Professor Bertland, a cell biology professor at the University of Hawaii in the United States, disclosed their findings at the 12th International Carotenoid Symposium in Cairns, Queensland, Australia.
There are 80 to 100 types of carotenoids in natural foods (green leafy vegetables and red-yellow fruits), and the human body can absorb about 30 of them appropriately.
They found that there are carotenoids in the human retina, and the loss of carotenoids is likely to cause macular degeneration in the elderly, which leads to blindness.
Bertland said: "Cells in organs also have social behavior patterns. They exchange information with each other through small pores in the cell membrane. When an organ becomes cancerous, the function of cell-to-cell communication fails in some way, and cells begin to exhibit autonomous behavior."
