Foods not to be eaten together.

1. It is not advisable to eat eggs and soy milk together: People often drink soy milk with eggs, believing that since both are rich in protein, it is beneficial to the body. However, from a scientific dietary perspective, they should not be consumed together. This is because raw soy milk contains trypsin inhibitors, which can inhibit the activity of human proteases, affecting the digestion and absorption of protein in the human body. The egg white contains viscous protein, which can combine with the trypsin in soy milk, hindering the breakdown of protein and thereby reducing the body's absorption rate of protein.

2. It is not advisable to eat radishes and oranges together: Clinical experiments have found that after cruciferous vegetables like radishes are consumed by the human body, they can rapidly produce a substance called thiocyanate, which is quickly metabolized into another anti-thyroid substance—thiocyanic acid. The amount of this substance produced is proportional to the intake of the vegetables. At this time, if flavonoids from oranges, which contain large amounts of plant pigments, are ingested and decomposed by bacteria in the intestine, they are converted into protocatechuic acid and ferulic acid. These two substances can enhance the inhibitory effect of thiocyanic acid on thyroid function, thereby inducing or causing goiter. Therefore, these two foods should not be eaten together, especially in areas where goiter is prevalent, or for people who already have goiter, who should be even more cautious.

3. It is not advisable to eat persimmons and sweet potatoes together: Persimmons are sweet in taste and cold in nature, capable of clearing heat, promoting the production of body fluids, moistening the lungs, and contain nutrients such as protein, carbohydrates, fat, pectin, tannic acid, vitamins, and inorganic salts. Sweet potatoes are sweet in taste and neutral in nature, tonifying deficiency and Qi, strengthening the kidneys and spleen, and contain large amounts of carbohydrates and other nutrients. When eaten separately, both are beneficial and harmless to the body. However, when eaten together, they can be detrimental to the body. This is because eating sweet potatoes causes the stomach to produce a large amount of hydrochloric acid. If persimmons are then eaten, the persimmons will form a precipitate under the action of stomach acid. This precipitate can clump together to form an insoluble mass that is difficult to digest and expel, easily leading to persimmon phytobezoars, and in severe cases, surgery may be required.

4. It is not advisable to drink milk with chocolate: Milk is rich in protein and calcium, while chocolate contains oxalic acid. If the two are eaten together, the calcium in the milk will combine with the oxalic acid in the chocolate to form calcium oxalate, which is insoluble in water. After consumption, it is not absorbed and can also cause symptoms such as diarrhea and dry hair, affecting growth and development. Therefore, they should not be eaten together.

5. Some fruits should not be eaten with seafood: People like to eat seafood and also like to eat fruit, especially children. However, it should be noted that if you eat grapes, hawthorns, pomegranates, persimmons, and other fruits while eating seafood, symptoms such as vomiting, abdominal bloating, abdominal pain, and diarrhea may occur. This is because these fruits contain tannic acid, which, when it encounters the protein in seafood, will precipitate and coagulate, forming a substance that is difficult to digest. At the same time, tannic acid also has an astringent effect, which can inhibit the secretion of digestive fluids, causing the coagulated substance to remain in the intestine for a long time, leading to fermentation. Therefore, seafood should not only not be eaten with the aforementioned fruits, but also, after eating seafood, one should wait for at least 4 hours before eating these fruits.

6. Milk, yogurt, and cheese should not be eaten at the same time as broccoli, soybeans, spinach, amaranth, and water spinach. This is because the former are rich in calcium, while the chemical components in the latter affect the digestion and absorption of calcium.

7. Other examples of foods that should not be eaten together include lamb and watermelon; bananas and taro; century eggs and brown sugar; tofu and honey; cucumbers and peanuts; mustard and rabbit meat; dog meat and mung beans; persimmons and crab.
