10 Important Notes on Consuming Blood-Enriching Foods

Anemia refers to a condition where there is a low count of red blood cells and insufficient hemoglobin in the blood. Based on the cause, it is medically classified into types such as iron-deficiency anemia, megaloblastic anemia, and hemolytic anemia, with iron-deficiency anemia being the most common.

When one has anemia, they need to replenish their blood. It is medically classified into types such as iron-deficiency anemia, megaloblastic anemia, and hemolytic anemia, with iron-deficiency anemia being the most common... How can one better replenish their blood, and what are the precautions to take when consuming iron-rich foods?

Foods containing calcium (such as tofu) and high-phosphate foods (such as milk) can chelate with iron supplements to form precipitates, so they should be avoided when taken together.

The most common and effective treatment for iron-deficiency anemia is through oral or injectable iron supplements. However, clinically, many patients report that oral iron supplements are not as effective as expected.

There are many factors that can affect the efficacy of iron supplements, which should be taken into consideration during use.

1. For oral iron supplements, ferrous sulfate, ferrous fumarate, and ferrous gluconate are preferred because iron is absorbed in its ferrous (divalent) form and functions in its ferric (trivalent) form. Traditional Chinese medicines for replenishing blood include Hong Tao K, Xue Er, Pu Xue, and Nü Ren Yuan.

2. When supplementing iron for anemia, one should adhere to the principle of "small doses, long-term use." Strictly follow the doctor's prescription for medication; never increase the dosage on your own to avoid iron poisoning. Also, never take a single large dose, as this can easily lead to acute iron poisoning. Symptoms of iron poisoning include: dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, shock, etc. In severe cases, it can lead to coma, convulsions, and even death.

3. When taking oral iron supplements, place the medicine on the tongue and swallow it directly with water; do not chew the medicine to avoid staining the teeth and affecting aesthetics.

4. Medication should be taken after meals to avoid taking it on an empty stomach, which can reduce the nausea and vomiting caused by gastrointestinal irritation. At the same time, take it with vitamin C or fruit juice, as an acidic environment facilitates iron absorption.

5. Foods containing calcium (such as tofu) and high-phosphate foods (such as milk) can chelate with iron supplements to form precipitates, so they should be avoided when taken together.

6. While taking oral iron supplements, do not drink strong tea or coffee, as they contain large amounts of tannic acid, which can form insoluble iron precipitates and hinder iron absorption. Milk and other alkaline substances can also affect iron absorption and should be avoided or consumed in minimal amounts. Dairy products (especially milk) contain the least amount of iron and should not be consumed in large quantities, as this will reduce the amount of iron already present in the gastrointestinal tract.

7. Be aware of the adverse effects of other medications on iron absorption: Tetracycline antibiotics can form insoluble complexes with iron supplements, which is not conducive to absorption. Therefore, simultaneous use should be avoided as much as possible. If both must be used, they should be administered at least 3 hours apart.

8. Strengthen dietary care. A correct and reasonable diet can prevent and treat iron-deficiency anemia. For patients already suffering from it, the effect of diet therapy alone is limited, but it can serve as an adjunctive treatment to prevent recurrence. Bad habits such as picky eating, food selectivity, and loss of appetite should be corrected. The diet should be varied, and one should consume more iron-rich, nutrient-dense foods, such as: meat, eggs, fish, various seafood (such as kelp, seaweed), animal liver and blood, coarse grains like buckwheat and sweet potatoes, soy products, mushrooms, black fungus, and a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables.

9. After taking the medication for several months, when clinical symptoms improve and hemoglobin levels return to normal, do not stop the medication immediately. Continue to take it for another 3-6 months under a doctor's guidance to replenish the body's stored iron and prevent a relapse of anemia.

10. During treatment with oral iron supplements, the iron reacts with hydrogen sulfide in the large intestine to form iron sulfide, which turns the stool a dark brown color, similar to gastrointestinal bleeding. There is no need to be alarmed by this, as the stool color will return to normal after stopping the iron supplement.
