Ten Foods Not to Eat Raw

One: Do not eat raw freshwater fish. Liver fluke eggs develop into cercariae in river snails and parasitize in fish. If raw freshwater fish is eaten, liver flukes will enter the human body and develop into adults, which can cause cholangitis and even lead to cirrhosis. According to a survey of cholangitis patients in a certain hospital, about 60% of them were fond of eating raw fish fillets, and among cirrhosis patients, 50% were fond of eating raw fish.

Two: Do not eat raw crabs and lobsters. Raw crabs carry metacercariae of lung flukes and Vibrio parahaemolyticus, while lobsters are intermediate hosts for lung flukes. After eating raw crabs and lobsters, lung flukes enter the human body, causing lung damage. In severe cases, it can lead to intestinal inflammation or intestinal edema and congestion. According to statistics, among outpatients, over 4,000 cases of lung damage, over 3,000 cases of intestinal inflammation, and over 2,000 cases of intestinal edema and congestion were caused by eating raw crabs and lobsters.

Three: Do not eat raw water chestnuts. Eating raw water chestnuts often allows the Fasciolopsis buski to enter the human body and attach to the intestinal mucosa, which can cause intestinal ulcers, diarrhea, or facial edema. According to a report from a hospital last March, among outpatients, over 400 people were infected with Fasciolopsis buski from eating raw water chestnuts, leading to intestinal ulcers, 158 had diarrhea, and 15 had facial edema.

Four: Do not eat raw eggs. The avidin in egg white binds with biotin in the intestines, hindering the body's absorption of biotin. Raw eggs also often contain Salmonella, which can cause vomiting and diarrhea.

Five: Do not eat fresh daylilies. Fresh daylilies contain colchicine, which is converted into colchicine oxide in the human body, an extremely toxic substance. Consuming 3-20 milligrams can be fatal.

Six: Do not eat fresh raw wood ear mushrooms. Fresh raw wood ear mushrooms contain porphyrin-like photosensitive substances. After consumption, they can cause solar dermatitis. In severe cases, symptoms include skin itching, edema, and pain.

Seven: Do not eat raw honey. When bees make honey, they often collect some poisonous pollen. After this poisonous pollen is brewed into honey, people who eat raw honey are prone to poisoning. Additionally, honey can easily be contaminated by bacteria during harvesting, transportation, and storage. Therefore, raw honey should not be eaten.

Eight: Do not drink raw soy milk. Soy milk is delicious and nutritious, and its nutritional value is no lower than that of milk. However, drinking unboiled soy milk can cause systemic poisoning. This is because raw soy milk contains some harmful components such as trypsin inhibitors, phenolic compounds, and saponins. Trypsin inhibitors affect the digestion and absorption of protein; phenolic compounds can give soy milk a bitter and fishy taste; saponin irritates the digestive tract, causing vomiting, nausea, and diarrhea, which in turn destroys red blood cells, produces toxins, and leads to systemic poisoning.

Nine: Do not eat raw beans. Beans include lima beans, kidney beans, green beans, sword beans, and French beans. Eating beans can easily cause poisoning because they contain a toxic protein called "lectin," which is most abundant in mature or older beans. Beans should be boiled or heated over high heat for at least 10 minutes to remove the "lectin." When stir-frying beans or using them as a filling, they must be thoroughly heated, and when eating cold-dressed beans, they should also be boiled for 10 minutes.

Ten: Do not eat raw white sugar. Mites are often parasitic in white sugar, and eating it raw can easily lead to acariasis. Mites are tiny, hairy insects invisible to the naked eye and reproduce quickly in sugar. If mites enter the gastrointestinal tract, they can cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, and ulcers. If they enter the lungs, they can cause hemoptysis and asthma. If they enter the urinary tract, they can cause urinary tract inflammation. Therefore, white sugar should preferably not be eaten raw and should be heated before consumption (generally, heating to about 70°C and keeping it for 3 minutes is sufficient).
